Who Monica Rambeau is
When we meet adult Monica, she has just come back from the Blip and learned that the world kept moving without her. Her mother died while she was gone, and she returns to work at S.W.O.R.D., the agency her mother helped build, only to be sent on what looks like a routine drone check outside Westview. Then she disappears inside the town and wakes up as a cheerful sitcom neighbor named Geraldine.
That setup tells you a lot about her. Monica is a trained officer, calm under pressure and stubbornly decent. She keeps choosing to understand Wanda instead of fighting her, even when her own bosses would rather do the opposite.
Every Monica Rambeau appearance in order
- Captain Marvel (2019, film, essential): Monica as a child, played by a younger actress
- What If...? (2021, series, optional): an alternate-universe animated appearance
- WandaVision (2021, series, essential)
- The Marvels (2023, film, recommended)
WandaVision and The Marvels carry her adult story; What If...? sits outside the main timeline. WandaVision gives her the bigger character arc, while The Marvels puts her on a three-hero team and leans into action.
Turning points, kept light
Her key moment in WandaVision is crossing the energy barrier around Westview more than once. Each pass changes her a little, and by the end she can see and absorb energy in ways no normal human can. The show treats this as the start of something rather than a finished origin, so expect questions to stay open.
In The Marvels, her new abilities get tangled up with Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan. Whenever the three of them use their powers at the same moment, they swap places across space, which turns every fight into a scramble. Under the comedy there is a real grudge: Monica grew up thinking of Carol as family, and Carol never came back.
Allies and rivals
Inside and outside the Hex, Monica works with FBI agent Jimmy Woo and scientist Darcy Lewis, and that trio is one of the warmest parts of WandaVision. She also has a sharp run-in with Agatha Harkness, the nosy neighbor who is clearly hiding something. In The Marvels, her relationship with Carol Danvers carries the emotional weight, and Kamala's starstruck energy keeps the film light.
Teyonah Parris as Monica
Parris plays Monica with a steady, grounded quality that works well next to the louder magic and cosmic chaos around her. She is just as convincing playing a sitcom housewife as she is giving orders in a crisis, which WandaVision asks her to do in the same episode. Outside the MCU, many viewers know her as Dawn Chambers in Mad Men, and she also starred in the horror film Candyman and appeared in If Beale Street Could Talk.
How to watch her story
Start with WandaVision. It is a Disney+ series, so if you are going through the shows in sequence, our list of Marvel TV shows in order shows where it sits. It helps a lot if you already know Wanda and Vision from the Avengers films, though it is not strictly required for Monica's part.
Then watch The Marvels. Seeing the Ms. Marvel series first makes Kamala's scenes land better, but Monica's own arc only needs WandaVision. If you only have time for one title, pick WandaVision: it shows where her powers came from and why she cares so much about doing the right thing.
