Moon Knight (Marc Spector)

Played by: Oscar Isaac

Moon Knight (Marc Spector) has one live-action MCU title, the Moon Knight series, and you can watch it at any point without any homework. Marc is a former mercenary who serves as the earthly fist of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, and he shares his body with at least one other identity. Oscar Isaac plays him, and in practice he plays several people at once.

Who Moon Knight is

The series does not open with Marc at all. It opens with Steven Grant, a soft-spoken, slightly awkward man who works in a museum gift shop in London, chains himself to his bed at night and keeps losing whole days. Steven thinks he has a sleep problem. The truth is that he shares a body with Marc Spector, an American ex-mercenary who made a deal with Khonshu, and when Marc takes over, the costume comes out.

That is the hook. Moon Knight is less a superhero origin than a mystery about a mind. Dissociative identity disorder sits at the center of the story, and the show treats it as part of who the hero is rather than a twist to be cured.

His appearances

  1. Moon Knight (2022, series, optional)
  2. What If...? (2021, series, optional): an alternate-universe animated appearance

Apart from the animated What If...?, there are no other credits on our list, and the series makes no direct reference to the Avengers. That is why it is marked optional: it is a self-contained story, not a building block for later films. For many viewers, that is exactly its appeal.

The turning points, spoiler-light

The early episodes play like a puzzle. Steven slowly figures out that he is not alone, and the audience learns about Marc through the gaps in Steven's memory. Mirrors and reflections become the way the two of them talk.

The middle of the season moves to Egypt, where the story turns into an adventure about tombs, gods and an ancient judge of souls. Later episodes go somewhere stranger and more personal, digging into the childhood trauma that split Marc's mind in the first place. Pay attention to the final scenes: the show hints that the list of identities is longer than it seems.

The people in his corner and in his way

Khonshu is a constant presence, a towering bird-skulled god who talks to Marc whenever he likes and rarely says thank you. Layla El-Faouly, played by May Calamawy, is Marc's wife, and her frustration at being kept in the dark gives the show its emotional anchor. The main villain is Arthur Harrow, a calm cult leader played by Ethan Hawke, who once served Khonshu himself and now preaches punishment before the crime.

Oscar Isaac's double act

Isaac is the reason the series works. His Steven has a nervous British accent and a gentle sense of humor, while his Marc is clipped, tired and quick to violence. Scenes where the two argue in a reflection are shot as one actor talking to himself, and you never lose track of who is speaking. Outside Marvel, he is widely known as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, as the folk singer in Inside Llewyn Davis and as Duke Leto Atreides in Dune.

When to watch Moon Knight

Pretty much whenever you like. It belongs to the post-Endgame era, but nothing in it depends on earlier films or shows, so it makes a great break between bigger crossover titles. If you are working through the shows one by one, our guide to Marvel TV shows in order places it among the other Disney+ series.

Want the full timeline instead? The MCU chronological order lists every title around it. Just go in knowing that Moon Knight is more of a psychological thriller with mythology than a team-up setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

On our list he appears in two titles: the Moon Knight series and, in an alternate-universe animated story, What If...? He has not shown up in any of the films so far.

Who plays Moon Knight?

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector and his other identity, Steven Grant. He uses a different voice, posture and accent for each, which is a big part of the show's charm.

What MCU titles can I skip if I only care about Moon Knight?

All of them. Moon Knight is a standalone story, so you do not need any other movie or series to understand it. Watch it whenever you want a break from the bigger crossovers.
