The agent behind the Avengers Initiative
Coulson is a S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent with a dull suit, a calm voice and a habit of turning up wherever something strange is happening. In the early Phase 1 films he is the connective tissue: he follows Tony Stark around, he guards a mysterious hammer in New Mexico, and he reports back to Nick Fury about all of it.
He is also a fan. Coulson collects vintage Captain America trading cards and gets visibly nervous around Steve Rogers, which makes him the closest thing the films have to an audience stand-in. That ordinary, decent quality is why fans grew so attached to him.
Coulson's appearances on the timeline
Our list sorts his titles by when they happen in the story, not when they came out:
- Captain Marvel, essential (set years before the others)
- Iron Man, essential
- Iron Man 2, recommended
- Thor, recommended
- The Avengers, essential
- Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., optional
- What If...?, optional (an alternate-universe animated appearance)
How his role grows
In Captain Marvel he is a rookie partnered with a younger Fury, and it is fun to watch the two of them before either has any idea what is coming. Iron Man is where he really starts, introducing himself with his agency's comically long full name and refusing to go away. In Iron Man 2 he babysits Tony for Fury before being sent off to New Mexico, which sets up his role in Thor, where he leads the team studying the hammer and keeps an eye on the Asgardian who wants it back.
The Avengers is his defining film. Without spoiling the specifics for newcomers, Coulson's part in the story gives the arguing heroes the push they need to act as a team. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. then picks up with him leading a small squad of his own. The show runs on its own track and the films never return to its events, which is why we mark it optional.
The people around Coulson
Nick Fury is his boss and, by Captain Marvel, his old partner. Tony Stark finds him annoying at first and warms up to him over time; Tony's assistant, Pepper Potts, is the one who actually likes him, and their friendly scenes are a small treat in the Iron Man films. Jasper Sitwell is a fellow agent who works alongside him in the S.H.I.E.L.D. corner of the early films.
Clark Gregg in the role
Clark Gregg plays Coulson everywhere he appears, and in Captain Marvel he is digitally de-aged to play the younger version. Gregg's strength is understatement. He delivers jokes so flatly that they sneak up on you, and he makes a man in a tie feel just as brave as the people in armor.
Before Marvel, many viewers knew him from The New Adventures of Old Christine and from a recurring role as an FBI agent on The West Wing.
Best way to watch his story
For the essentials, watch Iron Man and The Avengers, then add Captain Marvel whenever it fits your order. To see everything, follow the list above in story order, or swap Captain Marvel to the end if you prefer release order; it plays as a flashback either way.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a big commitment and works best after The Avengers. Start it if you finished the films and want more of Coulson specifically. For other S.H.I.E.L.D. faces, see our MCU character list.
