Who is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine?
Val, as almost everyone calls her, is a government power broker who never seems to work for anyone but herself. She has a title, a budget and a habit of showing up exactly when someone is at their lowest point, with a job offer they probably should refuse. Her specialty is collecting people with dangerous skills and nowhere else to go.
Her first scenes are short ones in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and at the end of Black Widow, so later films treat her as someone the audience already knows. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever she is director of the CIA, and her chilly scenes with agent Everett Ross show how she treats loyalty: as something useful until it is not.
Valentina's MCU appearances in order
- Black Widow (2021), optional. The post-credits scene, where she points Yelena at a new target.
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), recommended. She recruits John Walker and gives him a new name.
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), recommended. A supporting role inside a much bigger story, but it shows her in an official position of power.
- Thunderbolts* (2025), essential. This is her film as much as anyone's. The team exists because of decisions she made.
- Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), essential on our list. The film has been announced, but plot details have not, so we will not guess what she does there.
Turning points, kept spoiler-light
Wakanda Forever establishes the key fact about her: she is high enough in the government to make problems disappear, and she is not afraid of being disliked. Thunderbolts* then flips the camera around. Instead of watching her from a distance, you see her schemes from the inside, and you watch the people she hired start comparing notes. That shift from background menace to main antagonist is the big change in her arc. How it ends is best discovered on screen.
The people in Val's orbit
Her recruits tell you most of what you need to know about her. Yelena Belova is the reluctant leader type, a trained killer who is tired of taking orders. John Walker is a former Captain America with a ruined reputation and something to prove. Red Guardian is Yelena's loud, nostalgic father figure, and Bucky Barnes brings a very different kind of experience with people who use soldiers as tools. Each of them has a reason to distrust Val, which is exactly why the dynamic works.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Val
Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Val as a mix of corporate charm and total ruthlessness. She delivers threats in the tone of someone confirming a lunch reservation, and that comic timing makes the character feel more dangerous, not less. Most viewers know her as Elaine Benes on Seinfeld and as Selina Meyer, the vain and scheming politician on Veep. Fans of indie comedy also remember her in Enough Said. If you enjoyed Selina Meyer, Val will feel like a cousin who got access to classified files.
Best order to watch Valentina's story
Start with Thunderbolts* if you want her story with the least homework. The film explains enough about each recruit that you can follow along even if you skipped their earlier titles. Then go back to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the Black Widow post-credits scene and Wakanda Forever for context: her scenes are short, but they add weight to her position in the government. Save Avengers: Secret Wars for its release, and catch up on the full roster on our characters page before you go.
