Who is Volstagg?

Volstagg is the big, bearded, booming member of the Warriors Three, the trio of Asgardian fighters who grew up alongside Thor. The other two are the swashbuckling Fandral and the grim Hogun, and together with Lady Sif they form the prince's inner circle. Volstagg is the one who laughs loudest, eats the most and charges into battle with an axe and a grin. He is comic relief, but he is also a seasoned soldier and a loyal friend who will defy a king for the right reason.

Volstagg's films in order

  1. Thor (2011), recommended. His debut, and the film where he has the most to do.
  2. Thor: The Dark World (2013), recommended. He fights across the Nine Realms and helps in a tense mission inside Asgard.
  3. Thor: Ragnarok (2017), essential. A brief appearance, but the film itself is a must for the MCU's main story.

That is the whole list. Unlike many Asgardians, he never crosses over into the Avengers films or the Disney Plus series.

Moments that define him

In the first Thor, the Warriors Three follow their prince to Jotunheim on a reckless mission, and later they make a choice that puts them at odds with the throne in order to help Thor on Earth. Their arrival in a small New Mexico town, dressed for a fantasy epic, is one of the film's funniest scenes. The Dark World gives Volstagg a quieter, braver role: he stays behind to buy his friends time when it counts. Ragnarok is a different story. Asgard is under attack from Hela, and the Warriors Three get only a few seconds of screen time. It is a sudden, sobering moment, and the film moves on quickly, which is part of why it lands.

Asgard's inner circle

His story only makes sense next to the people around him. Thor is his friend before he is his king, and Volstagg treats him with affectionate bluntness. Loki is the brother who never quite fit in with the Warriors Three, and the tension between them shows up in small jabs. Odin is the ruler whose orders they sometimes bend. Heimdall, the gatekeeper on the Bifrost, is a fellow guardian whose own loyalty gets tested in the same films.

Ray Stevenson's take on the role

The late Ray Stevenson played Volstagg with real warmth. He made the character more than a set of jokes about appetite, letting you see the veteran soldier underneath the belly laughs. Stevenson had a commanding screen presence that he used in very different ways elsewhere: he was the soldier Titus Pullo in the HBO drama Rome, he played Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone, and he was the villainous British governor in the Indian epic RRR. Star Wars fans also know him as Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka.

How to watch Volstagg's story

Release order is the only sensible order here, and it matches the timeline too. Watch Thor for his introduction, The Dark World for his biggest heroic moment, then Ragnarok, which you should see anyway for Thor, Hulk and the road to Infinity War. Frequently Asked Questions

Who played Volstagg in the MCU?

Ray Stevenson played Volstagg in all three of his films. He gave the character a big, warm presence that made him one of the most likable faces in Asgard.

What movies is Volstagg in?

Volstagg appears in Thor, Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. He is not in the Avengers movies or any of the Marvel series.

Who are the Warriors Three?

The Warriors Three are Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun, Asgardian fighters who are Thor's closest friends. Together with Lady Sif, they back Thor up in the first two Thor films.

Is Volstagg in Thor: Ragnarok?

Yes, but only briefly. The Warriors Three appear during Hela's attack on Asgard, in a short scene that shows how dangerous she is.

Do I need to watch the first Thor movies before Ragnarok?

Not strictly, because Ragnarok works well on its own. The first two films give Volstagg's short scene in Ragnarok much more weight, though, so they are recommended.

Are all Marvel movies connected to Asgard?

No, but the Thor films tie into the Avengers story. Ragnarok in particular leads straight into Avengers: Infinity War, which is why it is rated essential.
