Marvel Phase 2 in Order
Marvel Phase 2 in order is Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man.
For these six films, release order and story order are the same, so there is only one list to follow. They pick up after the Battle of New York and set the stage for the Avengers to fall apart.

Marvel Phase 2 in order at a glance
Here is the whole phase in one place, with a quick note on what each film adds to the bigger story and how much it matters if you are heading toward Civil War and Infinity War.
| Film | What it adds | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man 3 | Tony after New York, end of his solo trilogy | Recommended |
| Thor: The Dark World | The Aether and the Collector | Optional |
| Captain America: The Winter Soldier | S.H.I.E.L.D. shaken, Bucky returns | Essential |
| Guardians of the Galaxy | The cosmic side, the Power Stone | Essential |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron | Wanda, Vision, cracks in the team | Essential |
| Ant-Man | Scott Lang and the Quantum Realm | Recommended |
The logic of Phase 2
If Phase 1 asked whether a shared universe could work, Phase 2 asked what happens next. Every film deals with the fallout of The Avengers in its own way. Tony Stark cannot shake what he saw, Steve Rogers stops trusting the people who give him orders, and the wider universe opens up beyond Earth.
It is also the phase where Marvel stretched its genres. You get a holiday-set character study, a political spy thriller, a space adventure built around a mixtape and a heist comedy. That variety is a good reason to watch the phase as a set.
Film by film, and why each one is here
Iron Man 3 opens the phase with Tony coping badly after New York. It is the most personal of the Iron Man films and closes his solo trilogy.
Thor: The Dark World returns to Asgard and introduces the Aether, later revealed as the Reality Stone. It is the lightest on lasting plot, but its mid-credits scene introduces the Collector.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the turning point. It reshapes S.H.I.E.L.D., brings back Bucky and changes how Steve sees his role. If you only watch one Phase 2 film, make it this one.
Guardians of the Galaxy takes the franchise into space, introduces the Power Stone and gives Thanos his first real speaking scene.
Avengers: Age of Ultron brings in Wanda Maximoff and Vision and plants the seeds of Civil War.
Ant-Man closes the phase on a smaller scale. It introduces Scott Lang, Hank Pym and the Quantum Realm, all of which matter by the time Endgame arrives.
Following the Infinity Stones through Phase 2
Phase 2 is where the stones stop being background props and start forming a pattern. Keep an eye on three of them:
- The Reality Stone appears as the Aether in Thor: The Dark World.
- The Power Stone sits inside the Orb that Peter Quill steals at the start of Guardians of the Galaxy.
- The Mind Stone powers Loki's scepter, which surfaces in the mid-credits scene of The Winter Soldier and later gives Vision his life in Age of Ultron.
You do not need to track them to enjoy the films. Doing it, though, makes Infinity War feel like the payoff it was built to be.
Post-credits scenes worth waiting for
Most Phase 2 films hide something after the credits. The Winter Soldier introduces the twins who return in Age of Ultron. Guardians of the Galaxy ends on a silly cameo in the Collector's museum. Age of Ultron gives Thanos a short, memorable moment, and Ant-Man has two scenes: one sets up its sequel, the other is a clip that leads into Captain America: Civil War.
Short route, full route and time
Watching all six films takes roughly twelve to thirteen hours, a weekend if you double up. For a shorter run, keep The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron. Those three carry the threads Civil War and Infinity War pull on. Ant-Man is the next one to add, because Endgame relies on it.
Thor: The Dark World is the usual skip. You lose little story, though stone-trackers may want it for the Reality Stone. Our marathon plan can spread whichever route you choose across the evenings you actually have free.
The TV tie-ins
Phase 2 is also when Marvel's TV side ran closest to the films. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reacts in real time to the twist in The Winter Soldier, so its first season reads very differently after you have seen the film. Agent Carter, a period series set after The First Avenger, ran during this phase as well. Netflix's Daredevil premiered in this window too.
None of these is required, but if you like the spy angle of Winter Soldier, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a natural extension. Our guide to Marvel shows in order shows where each series sits.
Mistakes to avoid in Phase 2
Watching Age of Ultron without The Winter Soldier. The state of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the team's mood depend on it.
Treating Ant-Man as filler. It is small in scale, yet the Quantum Realm it introduces becomes central later on.
Forgetting about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In story order it takes place shortly after the first Guardians, which is why the Marvel chronological order slots it into this stretch even though it is a Phase 3 release.
Rushing straight to Infinity War. Phase 3 still has several films that bridge the gap, and Civil War in particular changes the relationships Infinity War depends on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Marvel Phase 2 movies in order?
The six films are Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. That list works for both release order and story order.
How many movies are in Marvel Phase 2?
Phase 2 has six movies. It opens with Iron Man 3 and closes with Ant-Man, with Avengers: Age of Ultron as its big team-up.
Which Phase 2 movie is the most important?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier matters most. It changes S.H.I.E.L.D., brings back Bucky Barnes and sets up the conflict in Captain America: Civil War. Age of Ultron is a close second.
Can I skip Thor: The Dark World?
Yes, it is the most commonly skipped Phase 2 film. You will miss the introduction of the Reality Stone and some of Thor and Loki's family story, but nothing later films cannot fill in.
Is Ant-Man part of Phase 2 or Phase 3?
Ant-Man is the final film of Phase 2. It is set after Avengers: Age of Ultron and introduces the Quantum Realm, which becomes important in Avengers: Endgame.
How long does it take to watch Marvel Phase 2?
The six films take roughly twelve to thirteen hours. Most viewers can finish them over a weekend by watching two or three per day.
Which Infinity Stones appear in Phase 2?
Three of them. The Reality Stone shows up as the Aether in Thor: The Dark World, the Power Stone is inside the Orb in Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Mind Stone powers Loki's scepter before ending up in Vision.
Should I watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 right after the first Guardians?
You can. It is a Phase 3 release, but its story is set only a short time after the first film, so story-order viewers often watch it before Age of Ultron. Release-order viewers wait until Phase 3.
Do I need to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Phase 2?
No, it is optional. The series reacts to events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so it is rewarding if you enjoy that film, but the movies never require it.
