The show premiered in June 2018 and belongs to the Marvel TV era, when series were made separately from the Marvel Studios films. The Avengers are never part of its story, and no movie depends on it. That freedom makes the placement easy: watch it whenever it suits you, as long as you finish it before the crossover.
Where it fits among the Marvel TV shows
We list this series by its story years, in a short block of Marvel TV shows that follows Thor: Ragnarok: Inhumans first, then Runaways, then Cloak & Dagger. These shows are only loosely connected to the films, so read the placement as a matter of dates, not of shared plots.
The one real connection runs to Marvel's Runaways, the show just before it on our list. Tandy and Tyrone visit the Runaways in that series' third season, so the smoothest route is to finish both seasons of Cloak & Dagger before you get there. The crossover assumes you know where the pair ended up, and it builds on where their season 2 story leaves them.
After it comes Ant-Man and the Wasp, which takes the list back to the films just before Avengers: Infinity War. There is no plot link between the two; the film simply follows in story time. To see every Marvel series laid out together, including the Netflix shows and the newer Disney Plus ones, our Marvel TV shows in order list covers the full lineup. If you would rather fit it among the films, our Marvel chronological order guide sorts the universe by story date, while the Marvel release order guide follows the original premiere dates.
Two ways to fit it in
If you only care about the crossover, the order is short and clear:
- Marvel's Cloak & Dagger, season 1
- Marvel's Cloak & Dagger, season 2
- Marvel's Runaways, season 3
If you are working through every Marvel TV series, keep it in our listed spot between Runaways and Ant-Man and the Wasp, but watch Runaways seasons 1 and 2 first and hold season 3 until Cloak & Dagger is done. That small swap keeps both shows spoiler-free.
What the series is about (no spoilers)
Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson grew up in New Orleans in very different worlds. Tandy's family was comfortable until a disaster at a Roxxon oil platform took her father and her safety net with it. Tyrone comes from a strict, loving household and is headed for a good school when tragedy hits his family on the same night.
Both kids were touched by something strange that night. Years later, now teenagers, they meet again and find that their new powers are tied to each other. Tandy can create blades of light and see people's hopes. Tyrone can teleport through darkness and sense their fears. The show is as much about grief, class and racial injustice as it is about superpowers, and it treats those themes seriously.
Season 1 is largely an origin story built around Roxxon and the night that changed both lives. Season 2 widens the scope, darkens the tone and gives the supporting cast much more to do.
Is it essential?
No. On our list it is optional, and you lose nothing from the main MCU story by skipping it. It is worth your time if you enjoy character-driven teen drama, a strong sense of place and slow-building mysteries. New Orleans feels like a real city here, not a backdrop. Fans of Runaways should prioritize it, given the crossover.
Cast and characters
Joe Pokaski created the series. Aubrey Joseph plays Tyrone Johnson, the future Cloak, and Olivia Holt is Tandy Bowen, the future Dagger. Their chemistry carries the whole thing. Gloria Reuben plays Tyrone's mother, Adina, and Andrea Roth is Tandy's troubled mother, Melissa. J.D. Evermore plays Detective Connors, a cop tied to one of the darkest moments in Tyrone's past. Emma Lahana is Detective Brigid O'Reilly, whose story takes a sharp turn in season 2 when Mayhem enters the picture.
