Marvel's Iron Fist watch order in the Netflix lineup
On our timeline the show sits between Marvel's Luke Cage and Marvel's The Defenders. It premiered in 2017 as the fourth and final solo series of the original Netflix deal, and its story runs from 2016 to 2018.
That span matters. Season 1 leads straight into The Defenders, while season 2 picks up after the team-up, so a strict chronological viewer splits the two seasons around it.
| Step | Title | Note |
|---|
| 1 | Daredevil season 2 | Introduces the Hand properly |
| 2 | Luke Cage | Previous show in our order |
| 3 | Iron Fist season 1 | Danny's origin and the setup |
| 4 | The Defenders | The four heroes team up |
| 5 | Iron Fist season 2 | Picks up after the team-up |
Our Marvel Netflix shows in order guide lays out the full interleaved sequence, including Jessica Jones and The Punisher, if you want every season in its proper place.
What to watch first
No movie is required. The Netflix shows mostly kept to the streets of New York and rarely name-checked the Avengers. In our broader timeline the show falls between the films Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, but that is a calendar position, not a story link; neither film mentions Danny Rand.
What does help is the second season of Daredevil, because the Hand, the ancient criminal organization Danny was trained to oppose, first takes real shape there. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage come earlier in our order too. They are not direct setup for Danny's story, yet they introduce the nurse Claire Temple, who turns up here and helps tie the four shows together.
What the show is about (no spoilers)
A barefoot young man walks into the lobby of Rand Enterprises and announces that he is Danny Rand, the heir everyone believed died in a plane crash 15 years ago. The company is now run by Ward and Joy Meachum, the children of his late father's business partner, and neither of them is eager to welcome back a stranger with a wild story about a hidden city in the mountains.
That city is K'un-Lun, where Danny was raised by warrior monks and earned the power of the Iron Fist, which lets him focus his energy into a glowing, near-unstoppable punch. He wants his name and his share of the family business back. He also wants to keep a promise to the monks, and those two goals pull him in very different directions once he learns how far the Hand has already spread through the city.
Is it essential? How it sets up The Defenders
For the movies, no. Iron Fist is optional on our list, and you can skip it without losing anything the films rely on. The picture changes if you plan to watch The Defenders, because Danny and the Hand sit at the center of that miniseries. Skip his show and you meet several key players cold.
Plenty of viewers rank this as the weakest of the four solo shows, mostly because season 1 moves slowly. Season 2 is tighter and more focused, and it hands Colleen Wing a bigger share of the action. On the fence? Watch season 1 for the setup and decide from there.
Cast and characters
Finn Jones plays Danny Rand, earnest and hot-tempered in equal measure. Jessica Henwick is Colleen Wing, a dojo owner with serious skills of her own and, for many fans, the best thing in the series. Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey play Joy and Ward Meachum, siblings whose loyalties keep shifting, and David Wenham is their father Harold. Sacha Dhawan plays Davos, Danny's oldest friend from K'un-Lun. Scott Buck developed the show for television.
Where to watch Marvel's Iron Fist and runtime
In the US, both seasons stream on Disney Plus, alongside the rest of the Netflix-era Marvel shows. Viewers elsewhere should check the watch box on this page, since availability varies by country.
There are 2 seasons and 23 episodes, each running about 56 minutes on average. That works out to roughly 21 hours in total, a real commitment compared with a two-hour film. For a full list of Marvel series from every era, see our Marvel TV shows in order guide, and the marathon plan can estimate how much those 21 hours add to your schedule.
