Who Everett Ross is
When we meet Ross, he is a deputy task force official handling the mess after the Sokovia Accords. He is the government man in the room: dry, a little smug and convinced that superheroes need supervision. He clashes with the Avengers, and he is especially wary of Bucky Barnes.
Wakanda changes him. After he sees what the country really is, Ross goes from the outsider who asks too many questions to the American who keeps its secrets. That shift, from bureaucrat to loyal friend, is what makes him more than a background suit.
Everett Ross in order
- Captain America: Civil War (essential)
- Black Panther (essential)
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (recommended)
- Secret Invasion (series, optional)
The first three are real supporting roles, with Black Panther giving him the most screen time. Secret Invasion uses him briefly, so it is not a place to go looking for his arc.
How his story turns
In Civil War, he is mostly an obstacle for Steve Rogers and his allies, and he shows how the Accords look from the government side. Black Panther is the big turn. A mission in South Korea goes badly, and Ross ends up in Wakanda, out of his depth and completely dependent on Shuri and the people around T'Challa. By the end he is no longer a spy watching Wakanda; he is helping defend it.
Wakanda Forever pushes that loyalty further. Ross takes risks inside the CIA to help his Wakandan friends, and the film introduces a personal complication at the agency that puts his career on the line. It is a smaller part than in Black Panther, but a satisfying follow-through.
People in his orbit
T'Challa and Shuri are his closest connections; he owes them a great deal, and the films let that gratitude show. Ayo and the Dora Milaje treat him with open suspicion, which produces some of his funniest moments. Bucky Barnes is someone he once tried to lock up, and War Machine is a fellow government-minded figure during the Accords conflict.
About the actor: Martin Freeman
Martin Freeman is a master of the slightly irritated everyman, and that is what makes Ross work. He gives the character a deadpan reaction to every strange thing in Wakanda, so audiences see the country through a skeptic who is slowly won over. Freeman is famous for Tim in the original British version of The Office, Dr. Watson in Sherlock, Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit films and Lester Nygaard in the first season of Fargo.
Which order to watch
Start with Civil War, then Black Panther. Those two give you his full arc from outsider to friend. Add Wakanda Forever if you want to see how that friendship holds up under pressure, and treat Secret Invasion as optional unless you are watching the series for Nick Fury anyway. Our character directory lists the rest of the Wakanda cast.
