A title, not just a hero
Black Panther is a role passed down through Wakanda's royal line. Whoever holds it gains enhanced strength and senses from the heart-shaped herb and wears a vibranium suit, but the job is as much political as physical. The Panther must protect a hidden, technologically advanced nation that has kept itself secret from the rest of the world for generations.
T'Challa carries the title first. He is a calm, principled prince who becomes king and has to decide whether Wakanda's isolation is still the right choice. Shuri, his younger sister, is the country's brilliant inventor and the one who builds the suits and gadgets. Her journey toward the mantle is the subject of the most recent film.

Turning points
T'Challa enters the MCU in grief and anger. In Civil War, an attack at a United Nations meeting leaves him hunting the man he believes responsible, and he finds himself in the middle of the Avengers' split. By the end he chooses justice over revenge, which shapes the king he becomes.
His solo film tests that choice at home. A challenger named Killmonger arrives with a claim to the throne and a sharp critique of how Wakanda has treated the world outside.
Wakanda becomes the battlefield in Infinity War, and Endgame gives the Panther and his people a key moment in the final battle. Wakanda Forever then follows a nation in mourning, with Shuri and her mother, Queen Ramonda, facing a new rival kingdom led by Namor.
Allies and rivals
Ayo, Okoye and the Dora Milaje guard the throne. M'Baku begins as a rival from the mountain Jabari tribe and becomes one of Wakanda's strongest supporters. Bucky Barnes finds refuge in Wakanda after Civil War, and T'Challa's earlier clash with Tony Stark over the Accords gives way to an uneasy respect.
The actors behind the mask
Chadwick Boseman played T'Challa with quiet dignity and warmth, turning a king into someone audiences felt they knew. Outside Marvel he played Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get On Up and the trumpeter Levee in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
Letitia Wright plays Shuri in all of these films. Her comic energy lights up the earlier movies, and Wakanda Forever asks her to carry grief and anger at the center.
In memory of Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman died on 28 August 2020, at the age of 43, from colon cancer. He had been diagnosed in 2016 and chose to keep his illness private, so the T'Challa audiences watched in Black Panther, Infinity War and Endgame was filmed while he was undergoing treatment. Knowing that gives the calm strength of his king a different weight on a rewatch.
Marvel decided not to recast T'Challa. Boseman's final performance in the role is his voice work in the animated What If...? (2021). Black Panther: Wakanda Forever then wrote the king's death into the story, opens with a Marvel Studios logo made of images of Boseman and is dedicated to him. Watched in order, that opening is a quiet farewell to both the actor and the character.
Best order for the Panther story
Watch all five in release order. If you are short on time, Civil War and Black Panther are the two that explain T'Challa best, and Wakanda Forever is the one to choose for Shuri.
