Who Frigga is

Frigga is the calm center of Asgard's royal family. Odin rules with authority and a long memory for grudges; Frigga leads with patience. She is a skilled fighter and a sorceress, and her magic hints at where Loki's talent for illusion came from. Most of all, she is the one person both of her sons trust completely, and the films use her to soften Asgard, a place that could otherwise feel like a cold hall of thrones and armor.

That matters because Thor and Loki pull the family apart in opposite ways. Thor is reckless and proud, Loki is jealous and secretive, and Frigga refuses to give up on either. Her love for Loki, in particular, never wavers even after he learns the truth about where he came from.

Frigga's movies in order

  1. Thor (recommended)
  2. Thor: The Dark World (recommended)
  3. Avengers: Endgame (essential)

In Thor, she has a small part, largely watching the crisis in the palace. The Dark World gives her real screen time. Endgame brings her back for a single, memorable scene.

Turning points, lightly told

The Dark World is her chapter. When dark elves threaten the Nine Realms, Frigga shows exactly how capable she is, and she is the one who visits Loki in his prison cell when no one else will. Those scenes reveal more about Loki than almost anything else in the early films. The film also gives Frigga one of the most emotional turns of the Thor series, and it hits both brothers hard.

In Endgame, during the time-heist mission, Thor finds himself back in Asgard and face to face with his mother. Their conversation is short but tender, and it gives Thor exactly what he needs at his lowest point. Many fans count it among the best small moments in the film.

Family ties

Thor is her firstborn, and his growth from arrogant prince to hero owes a lot to her advice. Loki is the son she adopted and fought hardest for, and he talks about her with a softness he shows almost no one else. Odin is her husband, and the films suggest she is the one who keeps his worst instincts in check.
