The secret at the end of a dirt road
For three films, nobody knew Clint Barton had a family. Then, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, a battered team needs somewhere to disappear, and Clint takes them to a farmhouse off the grid. Waiting there are Laura and their kids, Cooper and Lila, with another child on the way.
The reveal is played for quiet surprise rather than drama. Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Thor are suddenly guests in a family kitchen, and Laura is the one person in the house who is not rattled by gods and super soldiers. She knows exactly who her husband works with, and she runs the place with calm authority.
Laura's three appearances
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015, film, essential)
- Avengers: Endgame (2019, film, essential)
- Hawkeye (2021, series, recommended)
That is a short list, but each title uses her differently: as a safe harbor, as what Clint stands to lose, and finally as a partner with a past of her own.
What her story turns on (light on spoilers)
Laura matters in Age of Ultron because she is Clint's anchor. She talks to him plainly about the risks he takes and reminds him why he should come home. The farm also gives the team a moment to breathe, which is rare in an Avengers film. The kids greet Natasha Romanoff as "Auntie Nat," a small detail that shows how long the Bartons have been part of the team's private life.
Avengers: Endgame opens on the Barton farm, and that opening scene shapes everything Clint does in the film. Saying more would spoil one of the saga's most effective first minutes.
In Hawkeye, set around Christmas in New York, Laura is mostly at the other end of the phone while Clint tries to get home for the holidays. The series gives her a few moments that hint she understands his world better than anyone expected. It is a small addition, but a satisfying one.
Who she is connected to
Her husband, Hawkeye (Clint Barton), is the center of every Laura scene. Through the farm visit she also meets Iron Man (Tony Stark), Captain America and Thor, all of whom see a side of Clint they never knew existed. The rest of the Avengers are collected in our MCU character directory.
Linda Cardellini in the role
Linda Cardellini plays Laura with warmth and a dry edge. She never treats Laura as a worried spouse waiting by the window; she plays her as the most grounded adult in any room, which makes Clint more believable too.
Many viewers first knew Cardellini as Lindsay Weir in the cult series Freaks and Geeks. She played nurse Samantha Taggart on ER, Velma in the live-action Scooby-Doo films, and Judy in the dark comedy series Dead to Me.
Watching Laura's story in order
Go in release order, which here is also story order. Age of Ultron comes first and introduces the farm and the kids. Endgame follows, and its opening hits much harder once you have spent time in that kitchen. Hawkeye is last; it is recommended rather than essential, but it is the only title that gives Laura something new to do.
If you are short on time, Age of Ultron and Endgame are part of the core Avengers run anyway, so you will see most of Laura without any detours.
