Who Mobius is
The Time Variance Authority, or TVA, is an agency that exists outside time and protects what it calls the Sacred Timeline. Anyone who steps off that path, even slightly, is labeled a variant and arrested. Mobius works there as an analyst, and his specialty is unusual: he studies Loki. When a variant of Loki escapes during the time travel in Avengers: Endgame, Mobius is the agent who interrogates him and then argues that this prisoner is worth keeping alive.
His reason is practical. The TVA is chasing a variant who has been ambushing its soldiers, and Mobius believes nobody could predict a Loki better than another Loki. So he makes the God of Mischief a deal, and the series is built around their uneasy partnership.
His titles in order
- Loki (2021, series, essential)
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023, film, essential): the post-credits scene
Mobius was created for the Loki series, and nearly every scene with him lives inside it. The show is marked essential on our timeline because it introduces the TVA and ideas about the multiverse that later Marvel stories rely on.
Why the character works (spoiler-controlled)
Mobius is patient in a way nobody else in Loki's life has been. In their first conversation he simply plays back moments from Loki's own past and asks him what he sees, and that is enough to rattle a man who has spent years hiding behind tricks. Mobius does not shout or threaten. He asks follow-up questions, waits and lets silence do the work.
He is also funny in small, specific ways. He has a deep and slightly embarrassing love of jet skis, and he talks about his job with the weary good humor of an office lifer. Over time, his friendship with Loki becomes the emotional center of the show. What he discovers about the TVA itself, and how it changes him, is a major part of the plot and best left unspoiled.
The TVA crowd around him
Loki is his partner and, slowly, his friend. Inside the agency he works closely with Judge Ravonna Renslayer, an old colleague, and with Hunter B-15, a tough field officer who distrusts variants. Miss Minutes, the cheerful animated clock who explains how the TVA works, appears in many of his scenes. Sylvie, a mysterious variant, matters a great deal to the story, though meeting her is part of the fun. You can browse the full MCU character directory for Loki and the wider cast.
Owen Wilson as Mobius
Owen Wilson brings his familiar relaxed drawl to the role, and it fits perfectly. Mobius sounds like he has all the time in the world, which is exactly right for a man who works outside time. Wilson also gives him real warmth, so the friendship with Loki feels earned instead of convenient.
Outside Marvel, Wilson is known for comedies such as Wedding Crashers and Zoolander, for Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, and for voicing Lightning McQueen in Pixar's Cars films. He also co-wrote early Wes Anderson films, including Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.
What to watch before and with Loki
The series assumes you know two films. The Avengers introduces the version of Loki that Mobius meets, and Avengers: Endgame shows the moment this variant slips away. With those in mind, start the Loki series from its first episode, since Mobius shows up right away.
The other Thor and Avengers films help too, because Mobius makes Loki look at a future he never lived, and knowing that future adds weight to their scenes. Look up the other Loki variants in our character directory after you finish.
