Essential Marvel Movies and Shows Only
The essential Marvel movies and shows come down to 22 titles, from Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Secret Wars, and that is the shortest watch order that still follows the main story.
Everything else is optional. Below you will find why each title made the cut, what you give up by skipping the rest, and the one extra film that saves the most confusion.

How a title earns a spot
We used one test: does a later essential title assume you have seen this one? If the answer is yes, it stays. If a film mostly tells its own story and the big crossovers barely mention it, it goes.
That rule produces a lean list. Of the 22 entries, 20 are already out, and two of those are series: Loki and WandaVision. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are still ahead. The list follows story order, so it opens in World War II and jumps to the 1990s before Tony Stark builds his first suit.
The essential Marvel movies, one by one
Here is the whole list with the reason each title survives the cut.
| Title | Why it stays |
|---|---|
| Captain America: The First Avenger | Steve Rogers, Bucky and the Tesseract |
| Captain Marvel | Carol Danvers and Nick Fury's past |
| Iron Man | Tony Stark, and the start of the shared universe |
| The Avengers | The team forms and the stone hunt begins |
| Captain America: The Winter Soldier | S.H.I.E.L.D. falls and Bucky returns |
| Guardians of the Galaxy | Gamora, Nebula and the cosmic side of the story |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron | Wanda and Vision arrive |
| Captain America: Civil War | The team splits; Black Panther and Spider-Man debut |
| Black Panther | Wakanda, the site of a huge Infinity War battle |
| Doctor Strange | The Time Stone and its keeper |
| Thor: Ragnarok | Leads straight into Infinity War's opening |
| Avengers: Infinity War | Thanos goes after the stones |
| Avengers: Endgame | Closes the first saga |
| Loki | The Time Variance Authority and the multiverse |
| WandaVision | Wanda's grief and the powers that follow |
| Spider-Man: No Way Home | The multiverse cracks open |
| Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | Wanda and Strange collide |
| Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania | The Quantum Realm and a multiverse-scale villain |
| Thunderbolts* | A new team, and a final scene that looks ahead |
| The Fantastic 4: First Steps | Marvel's first family, from another reality |
| Avengers: Doomsday | The next Avengers crossover |
| Avengers: Secret Wars | The finale of the Multiverse Saga |
A few of these deserve a closer look. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the film that turns the franchise from origin stories into one connected thriller, and almost every later Captain America plot point traces back to it. Black Panther and Doctor Strange look like solo detours, but both heroes carry large parts of Infinity War, and you will feel lost in those scenes without them.
What you lose by cutting the rest
Honestly, not much plot, but some texture. Skipping Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 means less of Tony's growth between team-ups. Thor and Thor: The Dark World fill in Asgard and Loki's family story. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the gentler introduction to Peter Parker, and it builds the mentor bond with Tony that pays off later.
The Incredible Hulk is the easiest cut of all. Bruce Banner is played by a different actor there, and the Avengers films reintroduce him without needing it. Its main lasting link is Thaddeus Ross, who returns in Civil War with a new job and takes center stage much later in Captain America: Brave New World, a film that also sits outside this list.
You also lose most of the Disney Plus era's side characters. Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduce heroes who show up again, yet the essential films give you enough to follow them when they do.
The one add-on worth making
Ant-Man and the Wasp is not on the list, yet Endgame leans on the Quantum Realm it explains. Endgame gives you enough to follow along, but if that part feels rushed, the earlier film is the fix. It is the single most useful extra.
If you have room for a second add-on, pick Spider-Man: Homecoming. A third would be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which shows how Sam Wilson ends up carrying the shield.
How long the essential list takes
At one title a night, the 20 released entries fit into roughly three weeks. Most are two-hour films. The Avengers entries run longer, and the two series take several evenings each, since Loki has two seasons.
If that still feels like a lot, split it at Endgame. The first 13 titles finish the Infinity Saga with a natural stopping point, and the last nine form a tighter run toward the next Avengers films. The marathon plan can turn either half into a weekly schedule.
Mistakes with a minimal order
Skipping the two series. Loki and WandaVision are on the list because later films assume you saw them. Multiverse of Madness, in particular, picks up Wanda's story right where her show leaves it.
Shuffling titles to save time. The list is short precisely because the order does the explaining. Jumping around breaks the chain.
Assuming essential means best. Some excellent films are missing because they stand alone well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Shang-Chi are good examples. Once you have finished, go back for them.
When the short list is not enough
If you finish and want more, our list of all Marvel movies in order shows every film with its place on the timeline, and the full Marvel chronological order adds every series too. For team-up fans, the Avengers movies in order guide breaks down the prep for each Avengers entry. And if 22 titles is still more than you want for a first taste, the Marvel watch order for beginners starts even smaller.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the essential Marvel movies to watch?
The core list has 22 titles, including Iron Man, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It also includes Loki, WandaVision and the newer films that set up Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
What MCU movies can I skip?
You can skip The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor, Thor: The Dark World and most stand-alone sequels without losing the main plot. They add character depth but are not required for the crossovers.
Can I skip Ant-Man and the Wasp before Endgame?
You can, but it is the riskiest cut. Endgame relies on the Quantum Realm, which Ant-Man and the Wasp explains in more detail. If you have time for one extra film, make it that one.
Do I need to watch Marvel TV shows to follow the movies?
Only a couple. Loki and WandaVision are on the essential list because Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and other later films build on them. Most other series are optional.
How long does it take to watch only the essential Marvel movies?
The 20 essential titles already released take about three weeks at one per night. Most are two-hour films, with the Avengers entries and the two series taking longer.
Are all Marvel movies connected?
They share one universe, so events and characters cross over. The essential list follows the tightest connections. Optional films still fit the same continuity but are less tied to the main storyline.
Why is Spider-Man: Homecoming not on the essential list?
Peter Parker is properly introduced in Captain America: Civil War, which is enough to follow him in Infinity War and Endgame. Homecoming deepens his bond with Tony Stark, so it is the best second add-on if you have time.
Should I watch the essential Marvel movies in story or release order?
This list uses story order, which is why Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel come before Iron Man. Release order works too, as long as you keep Infinity War and Endgame back to back and watch WandaVision before Multiverse of Madness.
What is the minimum to watch before Avengers: Doomsday?
From this list, the most useful recent titles are Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic 4: First Steps. Add Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame if you have never seen how the first saga ended.
