Who is Wolverine in the MCU?
Wolverine is a mutant with a healing factor that lets him survive almost anything, senses sharper than any animal's, and a skeleton laced with adamantium, the near-indestructible metal that also coats the three claws in each hand. He is gruff, short-tempered and very hard to kill, which makes him a perfect, and perfectly unwilling, partner for Deadpool.
The version in Deadpool & Wolverine is not the hero from the Fox X-Men films. Wade Wilson goes looking for a Wolverine across the multiverse and ends up with a variant from a world where Logan let his friends down. That gives the character a raw, angry starting point and a reason to keep his distance.
His MCU appearances
- Deadpool & Wolverine (2024, film, recommended)
That is the complete list. Before this film, Jackman's Logan lived in Fox's separate X-Men series, which our guide treats as outside the main MCU timeline. The Marvel Studios version is just getting started.
The turning point: joining the MCU
The big change here is simply that Wolverine is now part of the MCU's multiverse. The film puts him in the bright yellow costume fans have wanted to see for a long time, and it treats his guilt seriously under all the jokes. Without spoilers, the story is about a broken man getting one more chance to be the hero his world needed. That emotional thread is what makes the film more than a buddy comedy.
Who he shares the screen with
His main partner is Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, and their constant clashing is the engine of the film. The TVA, the agency that monitors timelines, sets the plot in motion, so viewers who know Loki will recognize how it works. Cassandra Nova, the villain who rules the Void, is the main threat. Our cast data does not list other MCU characters as linked to Logan yet, which makes sense for someone who has only just arrived.
Hugh Jackman and Logan
Hugh Jackman has played Logan longer than almost any actor has stuck with a superhero role, across the whole Fox X-Men run and the darker Logan film. Coming back for the MCU let him play a version who is meaner and more wounded, without losing the dry humor. Beyond the claws, he is known for the musical The Greatest Showman, for playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, for the magician thriller The Prestige and for the crime drama Prisoners.
What to watch before and after
For MCU context, watch Loki season 1 first, because the TVA and the Void come straight from that series. Then watch Deadpool & Wolverine. If you want the full Fox backstory, Logan and the two Deadpool films add a lot of emotional weight, but they are optional and sit outside the MCU. Keep an eye on our characters page, where new appearances will be added as they are announced. Until then, this one film is the whole MCU story, and the MCU character directory lists the rest of the multiverse cast.
