Who is Yondu?
Yondu is the blue-skinned leader of a band of Ravagers, space pirates who steal, smuggle and sell anything that will fetch a price. He controls a deadly arrow by whistling, and his crew is just as scared of his temper as his enemies are. Years before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, Yondu was hired to pick up a young Peter Quill from Earth. Instead of delivering him, he kept the boy, raised him among the Ravagers and never really explained why.
That decision is the key to his whole character. He is a criminal and a bully, but the thing he did for Quill says a lot about who he might be underneath.
Yondu's titles in order
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, film, essential)
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017, film, recommended)
- What If...? (2021, series, optional): an alternate-universe animated appearance
- The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022, special, optional)
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023, film, recommended): a brief appearance
The Holiday Special is a short Disney Plus special. Yondu appears only in a brief animated flashback from Quill's childhood, so it is a bonus rather than a real chapter.
Big moments without spoilers
In the first film Yondu is mostly an obstacle. He wants the Orb that Quill stole, and their relationship is all threats and shouting, with just a hint of something softer. Vol. 2 is where he becomes one of the most important characters in the franchise. His crew turns against him, he finds an unlikely ally, and the story is finally honest about why he kept Quill. Many fans consider his arc in that film the emotional high point of the series. Go in without spoilers, and keep tissues nearby.
The Guardians around him
Star-Lord (Peter Quill) is the boy he stole and raised, the son he never admits he has. Rocket gets stuck with him in Vol. 2, and the two discover they have more in common than either wants to say out loud. Groot, in his tiny form, has a famously funny run of errands involving Yondu's prized fin. Nebula ends up on the Ravager ship in Vol. 2 at an awkward moment, pursuing her own fight with her sister.
Michael Rooker as Yondu
Michael Rooker plays Yondu with a gravelly growl and a grin that suggests he is always about to stab somebody. That roughness is exactly why the character's softer side lands so hard. Rooker has worked with director James Gunn several times, including on the horror comedy Slither. Many TV viewers know him as Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead, and film fans remember his chilling title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
How to watch Yondu's story
Watch the two films in release order. Guardians of the Galaxy introduces him, and Vol. 2 completes his arc and recasts the first film in a new light. The Holiday Special works as a seasonal extra after Vol. 2, and it is short enough to squeeze in anywhere. More Ravagers and Guardians are waiting on our MCU characters page.
