Where to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the US
Vol. 3 streams on Disney Plus in the US with a standard subscription. Every earlier Guardians title is on the same service, which makes a full trilogy weekend easy to set up. Outside the US, availability varies by country, so use the watch box on this page to see what is offered where you live.
At 150 minutes, this is the longest of the three films. Plan for two and a half hours, plus a few minutes for the credit scenes. If you add the 45-minute Holiday Special right before it, the pair fills a comfortable evening.
What to watch before Vol. 3
Two titles are on our official prerequisite list. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduces characters who return here and finishes building the family this film puts under pressure. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is short and easy to skip by mistake, but it shows the team's new home and contains a reveal that changes one relationship in this movie.
Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame matter too. They explain why Quill is grieving and why the Gamora in this film does not remember him. Thor: Love and Thunder is the one optional extra; it explains why Thor is no longer flying with the team.
| Title | Why it matters here | Priority |
|---|
| Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 | Sets up returning characters | Must watch |
| The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special | New base, one key reveal | Strongly advised |
| Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame | Quill's grief, the new Gamora | Must watch |
| Thor: Love and Thunder | Why Thor left | Optional |
Where it falls in the timeline
Vol. 3 reached theaters in 2023 as part of Phase 5, and its story takes place in 2026. On our chronological list it comes right after Secret Invasion, a Disney Plus series set on Earth, and before The Marvels, which brings Carol Danvers back for her own cosmic adventure. By release date the film before it is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels again comes next.
Most fans still treat Vol. 3 as the closing piece of its own trilogy rather than a stop on a larger road. Our Marvel Phase 5 in order guide places it among its neighbors, and the wider Multiverse Saga in order list shows the full stretch it belongs to.
The story, spoiler-free
By now the Guardians have settled on Knowhere and are trying to rebuild it, but Quill is spending more time drinking than leading. Then a sudden attack leaves Rocket badly hurt, and the team learns they cannot save him without digging into the past he has never talked about.
That sends them after the scientist who made Rocket, a man obsessed with building a perfect society at any cost. The film is the darkest of the three, with flashbacks to Rocket's origin that hit hard, especially for anyone who loves animals. It is still funny, yet the humor sits right next to real grief, and the finale is one of the most satisfying action sequences of the trilogy.
Why it matters for the MCU
We rate it recommended. It does not set up the next Avengers story in any big way. Instead it gives the original team a proper ending and decides where each member goes next. If you care about Rocket at all, this is his film. Our Guardians of the Galaxy in order page lists every title with the team if you want to see the full arc before or after.
Cast and characters
James Gunn writes and directs once more. Chris Pratt is Peter Quill, Zoe Saldaña plays a Gamora who is no longer the woman he knew, and Dave Bautista returns as Drax. Karen Gillan's Nebula and Pom Klementieff's Mantis get more to do than ever. Vin Diesel again voices Groot, now fully grown, and Bradley Cooper gives Rocket his most serious material yet. The villain is a new face, kept mostly inside Rocket's story rather than the wider universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 post credit scene notes
There are two scenes, and both are worth staying for. The mid-credits scene shows a new lineup of the team on a fresh mission, a warm send-off for the people who stay. The final scene after the credits leaves the door open for one character's return, with an on-screen promise but no date or project attached.
Neither scene sets up a specific upcoming film. When you are done, our marathon plan can help you schedule whatever comes next in the Multiverse Saga.
