The Ant-Man post-credit scene comes in two parts, one in the middle of the credits and one at the very end, and both point at films you will see soon after. Watch Ant-Man after Avengers: Age of Ultron and before Captain America: Civil War, which is also where the second scene pays off. The film needs no homework, so it is one of the easiest MCU entries to drop in anywhere.

Where to watch Ant-Man

In the US, Ant-Man streams on Disney Plus, the simplest place to find it alongside the rest of the saga. It has also been listed on Starz, including the Starz channels on Amazon, Apple TV and Roku, and on Philo. Catalogs change from time to time, so the watch box on this page shows the current options for your country.

The movie runs 117 minutes. Add a couple more if you plan to sit through the credits, and you should.

The Ant-Man post-credit scenes, spoiler-light

There are two extra scenes, and they do different jobs.

  • Mid-credits: Hank Pym takes Hope van Dyne somewhere private and shows her something he has been keeping back for years. It is a short, warm moment that sets up her future as the Wasp and makes the title of the sequel feel inevitable.
  • End-credits: The second scene has nothing to do with Scott at all. It drops you into a tense meeting between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, and it is effectively a preview of Captain America: Civil War. By the last line, you can guess who is about to get a phone call.

The first scene belongs to the Ant-Man series. The second belongs to the Avengers, and it explains how a small-time thief ends up at an airport fight with half the team a few months later. If you only have time for one, stay for the end.

Ant-Man watch order: before and after

The story is set in 2015 and closed out Phase 2 in theaters, arriving a few months after Age of Ultron. Release order and story order agree here, give or take the TV shows.

StepTitleWhy it matters
BeforeAvengers: Age of UltronThe previous stop in both film and story order
This filmAnt-ManIntroduces Scott, Hope, Hank and the Quantum Realm
Next on our timelineMarvel's DaredevilOpens the Netflix block, optional for film-only viewers
Next filmCaptain America: Civil WarScott joins Steve's side, as the end-credits scene hints

Our chronology folds in the Marvel TV shows, so the Netflix series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher) sit between this film and Civil War. You can skip that whole block if you are watching films only. For the full film sequence of this stretch, our Marvel Phase 2 in order guide lists every movie from Iron Man 3 to here.

There is nothing you have to watch first. A passing reference to the Avengers and a quick visit to their new headquarters are the only nods to earlier films, and both are easy to follow cold.

What the story is about (spoiler-free)

Scott Lang gets out of prison wanting one thing: to be a decent dad to his young daughter, Cassie. Nobody wants to hire an ex-con, and his old friends keep pitching new jobs. Meanwhile, Dr. Hank Pym has been watching him. Hank once wore a suit that shrinks its user to the size of an insect while increasing their strength, and he has kept it hidden for decades.

Now Hank's former protégé, Darren Cross, is close to copying that technology and selling it to buyers no one should trust. Hank needs a thief to stop him, and he wants Scott. What follows is a heist movie with a training montage, a lot of very useful ants, and one of the funniest fight scenes in the franchise, staged on a child's toy train set.

Why it matters for the MCU

On our list Ant-Man is recommended. You can skip it and still follow the Avengers movies, but you will meet Scott later without knowing how he got the suit or why he jokes his way through every crisis. The film also introduces the Quantum Realm, an idea that sounds like a throwaway here and becomes central by Avengers: Endgame.

Hope's story starts here as well, and it carries straight into Ant-Man and the Wasp, where she finally suits up. If you are planning a lighter route through the saga, our Marvel watch order for beginners explains which films around this one are worth your time.

Cast and characters

Peyton Reed directs. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, and his easy, self-deprecating charm defines the character from the start. Michael Douglas is Hank Pym, Evangeline Lilly plays his daughter Hope, and Corey Stoll is Darren Cross, who ends up in a suit called Yellowjacket. Bobby Cannavale plays Paxton, the cop dating Scott's ex-wife. Anthony Mackie also turns up as Sam Wilson, the Falcon, in a short sequence that is one of the film's best gags.

Tips for your viewing

Ant-Man works well as a palate cleanser after Age of Ultron, which is long and heavy. It is lighter, shorter and smaller in scale, and the jokes land better if you are not expecting a world-ending threat. Watch it with the volume up: the sound design flips between tiny and huge every time Scott shrinks, and a lot of the comedy lives in those switches.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many post-credit scenes does Ant-Man have?

Ant-Man has two extra scenes. The mid-credits scene sets up Hope van Dyne's future as the Wasp, and the end-credits scene is a preview of Captain America: Civil War. Both are short, so it is worth waiting through the credits.

Where can I watch Ant-Man?

In the US, Ant-Man streams on Disney Plus. It has also been listed on Starz, including the Starz channels on Amazon, Apple TV and Roku, and on Philo. Availability changes by country, so check the watch box on this page.

What is the Ant-Man watch order?

Watch Ant-Man after Avengers: Age of Ultron and before Captain America: Civil War. In our full timeline the Netflix shows, starting with Marvel's Daredevil, come between Ant-Man and Civil War, but film-only viewers can go straight to Civil War.

What should I watch before Ant-Man?

Nothing is required. Ant-Man works as a standalone film, and its few references to the Avengers are easy to follow without prior viewing. Age of Ultron came right before it if you want to keep the release sequence.

What powers does Ant-Man have?

His suit lets him shrink to insect size while becoming much stronger, and a special helmet lets him communicate with ants. Later films add the ability to grow to giant size, which first shows up in Captain America: Civil War.

Where was Ant-Man during Infinity War?

After Civil War he took a deal that put him under house arrest, so he stayed home while the Avengers fought. Ant-Man and the Wasp covers that period and shows exactly where he was when Infinity War happened.

Where did Ant-Man go for 5 years?

That question comes from Avengers: Endgame, not this film. Scott was stuck in the Quantum Realm, where time passes very differently, and Ant-Man and the Wasp explains how he got there. Endgame shows how he gets out.

How long is Ant-Man?

The movie runs 117 minutes, a little under two hours. Add a few extra minutes for the two credits scenes, especially the second one, which sets up Civil War.
