Marvel's The Defenders watch order: the shows to see first
This miniseries is the payoff of four solo shows, so it works best once you have seen them. The minimum is the first season of each: Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage and Marvel's Iron Fist. Daredevil season 2 is just as important, because it brings Elektra back into Matt's life and builds up the Hand, the ancient criminal group at the heart of the plot.
Iron Fist is the direct lead-in. Danny Rand's season ends with questions about the Hand that The Defenders picks up almost immediately, which is why our timeline places it right after that show.
The Netflix lead-up, season by season
If you want to arrive fully prepared, this is the order we suggest for everything before the team-up:
| Step | Season | Why it matters here |
|---|
| 1 | Daredevil season 1 | Matt Murdock, Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Madame Gao |
| 2 | Jessica Jones season 1 | Jessica's past and her first meeting with Luke Cage |
| 3 | Daredevil season 2 | Elektra, the Hand and the stakes of this story |
| 4 | Luke Cage season 1 | Luke's life in Harlem and Claire Temple's growing role |
| 5 | Iron Fist season 1 | Danny Rand and the Hand's plans for New York |
| 6 | The Defenders | All four together |
Claire Temple is worth watching for along the way. She drifts through almost every one of these seasons and is the closest thing the shows have to a connecting thread before the team actually forms.
Where it sits on the wider timeline
Next on our timeline is Marvel's The Punisher, which stays on the same New York streets. In movie terms, the whole Netflix block sits between Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, but treat that placement loosely: the films never mention these shows, and the series only nod back to big events like the Battle of New York. Think of it as a parallel corner of the universe rather than a step in the Avengers story. For every Marvel series beyond the Netflix era, see Marvel TV shows in order.
Once you finish, the solo series continue. Jessica Jones season 2, Luke Cage season 2, Iron Fist season 2 and Daredevil season 3 all follow, and Daredevil season 3 deals most directly with how this story ends. Our Marvel Netflix shows in order guide lists every season in sequence, including both seasons of The Punisher.
What the series is about (no spoilers)
New York is shaking, literally. A series of small earthquakes and strange disappearances point to the Hand, and each of the four heroes runs into a different thread of the same conspiracy. Matt Murdock has stopped being Daredevil and is trying to live as a lawyer. Jessica Jones takes a missing-person case she does not want. Luke Cage comes home to Harlem and finds young men being recruited for dangerous jobs. Danny Rand is hunting the Hand across the world and has followed them back to the city.
At first they do not trust each other, and the early episodes keep them in separate corners of the city, each shot with the color palette of its own show. It gets good when they finally share a room: four very different personalities, none of whom wants to be on a team, trading insults in a Chinese restaurant while the bad guys regroup.
Is it essential?
For the Netflix corner of Marvel, yes. The Defenders ties together threads from all four shows and changes the status quo for Matt Murdock in particular. For the movie timeline, no. The Avengers films never refer to it, so viewers who only follow the main MCU can skip it.
It is also short, which makes it an easy recommendation once you have put in the hours on the solo seasons. And if you plan to watch Daredevil: Born Again, knowing where Matt and his friends were left here adds context to his later story.
Cast and characters
Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez ran the series. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand, the Iron Fist. Élodie Yung's Elektra Natchios comes back changed, and Wai Ching Ho returns as Madame Gao, the Hand leader who has quietly been one of the most unsettling figures across the Netflix shows. Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Claire Temple all turn up in support.
Runtime and where to stream
Marvel's The Defenders is a single season of 8 episodes, each about 49 minutes, so the full series takes around six and a half hours. In the US it streams on Disney Plus alongside the rest of the Netflix-era shows; elsewhere, check the watch box on this page. Two evenings is a comfortable pace, and the marathon plan can fit the whole Netflix run around your week.
