Who is Emil Blonsky?
Blonsky is a career soldier on loan to General Thaddeus Ross, brought in to help capture Bruce Banner. He is good at his job and getting older, and he hates that last part. When he watches the Hulk shrug off an entire squad, envy takes over. He volunteers for an experimental version of the serum that once created Captain America, and from there he keeps asking for more.
That is what makes him interesting as a villain. He is no alien warlord or cosmic threat. He is a man who sees raw power and decides he deserves it, whatever it costs his body or his mind.
Abomination's appearances in order
Release order and story order match here:
- The Incredible Hulk (2008, film, optional on our list)
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021, film, recommended): a short cage-fight cameo
- She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022, series, optional on our list)
There is a long gap between the first two. In story terms, Blonsky spends most of the Infinity Saga locked away, which is why he never turns up in the Avengers films.
How the soldier became a monster
In the movie, the serum makes Blonsky faster and tougher, but it also chips away at his judgment. Hungry for a real rematch, he pushes a scientist to expose him to Banner's blood. The result is Abomination: a hulking, spiny creature who can match the Hulk blow for blow. Their final fight tears through the streets of Harlem and is still one of the most physical brawls in the early MCU.
She-Hulk picks him up years later in a very different mood. Blonsky now claims he has changed, and his case lands on the desk of lawyer Jennifer Walters. The series plays this mostly for comedy. Whether he really means it is left for you to judge, and we won't spoil where it goes.
Abomination and the Hulk
His whole identity is built around the Hulk. Blonsky does not want to rule anything. He wants to prove he is stronger than Banner's other half. That rivalry also ties him to Ross, the man who made the fight possible. One detail confuses newcomers: Edward Norton plays Banner in The Incredible Hulk, while Mark Ruffalo took over the role from The Avengers onward. It is the same character, just recast.
Tim Roth as Blonsky
Tim Roth plays Blonsky in The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk. He gives the character a dry, wiry intensity that makes the envy feel personal, so even when the role turns into a CGI giant you still sense the man underneath. His return in She-Hulk lets him loosen up and play the sillier side of the same person.
Outside Marvel, Roth is best known for Quentin Tarantino films such as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and for leading the TV series Lie to Me as a human lie detector.
How to watch his story
Start with The Incredible Hulk. It explains who he is, why he hates Banner and how he got his powers. Then go to She-Hulk, ideally once you are comfortable with the Hulk's later look and attitude. If you only care about Blonsky, the episodes he appears in are enough, though the show is light and quick to finish in full. For other villains and heroes, browse our MCU character list.
