Bruce Banner and the Hulk
Bruce Banner is one of the smartest people in the MCU, a physicist whose experiment with gamma radiation went badly wrong. Now a second being lives inside him: huge, green and almost impossible to hurt. For years the two are at war. Banner treats the Hulk as a curse to be contained, and the Hulk treats Banner as the thing that keeps locking him away.
What makes the character interesting is how that relationship keeps shifting. Over the films he goes from monster on the run, to reluctant teammate, to a strange partnership neither side planned.

How Banner and the Hulk changed
The Incredible Hulk is a chase movie: Banner hides, the army hunts him and he searches for a cure. The Avengers flips that idea when Banner reveals how he has learned to live with his anger, which gives Ruffalo's version its signature moment.
Age of Ultron shows what happens when the Hulk is pushed out of control, and it builds a tender, awkward romance with Natasha Romanoff. In Thor: Ragnarok the Hulk has been in charge for so long that he talks, sulks and enjoys his new life as a champion fighter. Infinity War and Endgame take Banner somewhere new again, and we will leave that change for you to see.
Later, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law lets him play teacher to his cousin, who gains powers through his blood. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day he crosses paths with Peter Parker, and his role there is best left unspoiled.
Teammates who matter most
Natasha Romanoff is the one who can calm him down, and their connection is one of the few times the films let Banner hope for a normal life. Tony Stark treats him as a fellow scientist rather than a weapon, which Bruce clearly appreciates. Thor is his sparring partner and, by Ragnarok, something like a friend. Steve Rogers is the leader who trusts him to choose when to let the Hulk out.
Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton
Edward Norton plays an intense, haunted Banner in The Incredible Hulk, a man always looking over his shoulder. He is known for Fight Club, American History X and Birdman. Mark Ruffalo took over from The Avengers onward and made Banner gentler and funnier, a nervous genius who jokes to keep people at ease. Ruffalo's other well-known films include Zodiac, Spotlight, Shutter Island and Poor Things.
A practical Hulk watch order
Watch the five essentials in release order: The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame. Add Brand New Day, which is recommended, once you are caught up on Spider-Man. The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk are optional. The first is a different take with a different actor, and the second is a comedy where Bruce is a guest rather than the lead.
