Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings watch order
The film is set in 2024, a few years after the Blip was reversed. On our timeline it sits between Spider-Man: Far From Home and Eternals, and in release order it opened in September 2021 as the first Phase 4 movie built around a brand-new hero. The two neighbors are unrelated to it, so think of them as bookmarks rather than prerequisites.
If you want to see where it lands among the other new heroes of that stretch, our Marvel Phase 4 in order guide lists every film and series from the phase in sequence.
What to watch first (all optional)
Nothing is required. The film introduces Shang-Chi, his family and the Ten Rings from scratch, and it explains its own mythology as it goes. A few earlier titles add flavor, though, and they explain some of the smaller surprises.
| Title | What it adds | Needed? |
|---|
| Iron Man | The Ten Rings organization's first appearance | No |
| Iron Man 3 | Why Trevor Slattery is embarrassed about his past | No |
| The Incredible Hulk | A familiar face who turns up in a fight | No |
| Doctor Strange | Who Wong is and where he lives | No |
If you only pick one, make it Iron Man 3, since Trevor's scenes are funnier when you know what he did there.
What the film is about (no spoilers)
Shaun parks cars in San Francisco with his best friend Katy and has no interest in talking about his childhood. That changes when a group of trained fighters attacks him on a city bus and goes after a pendant his mother gave him. To find out why, he has to reconnect with the sister he left behind and face his father, Xu Wenwu, a warlord who has used the ten rings to build an empire over a very long life.
The story moves from a grounded martial arts film into something far more mythic. The fight choreography is the main draw early on, especially the bus sequence and a scaffolding fight in Macau. The second half opens up a hidden world that feels unlike anything else in the MCU, and the family drama at its center keeps the spectacle personal.
Why it matters for the MCU
Shang-Chi is a fresh start, which is exactly why it works for newer viewers. You do not need the Infinity Stones or the multiverse to follow it, and it never pauses for a long cameo. Wong appears during the film, and so does an opponent from an older Marvel movie, but both moments work even if you have never seen those characters.
If you are building a first route through the newer phases, our Marvel watch order for beginners guide shows where this film slots in for first-timers.
The credit scenes (light spoilers)
There are two, so stay until the very end. The mid-credits scene brings Shang-Chi and Katy to Wong, who introduces them to Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers. The group studies the rings and finds they are sending out a signal to somewhere unknown, a mystery the MCU has kept open since.
The second scene, at the very end of the credits, returns to the Ten Rings organization and shows who is now in charge. It is a short beat, but it changes how you read the ending. Neither scene points to a specific later release yet, so they are teasers rather than homework.
Cast and characters
Destin Daniel Cretton directs. Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, going by Shaun at the start of the film. Tony Leung Chiu-wai is Xu Wenwu, one of the most sympathetic villains in the franchise, a father whose grief drives every decision. Awkwafina plays Katy, the friend who has no training at all and gets dragged along anyway. Meng'er Zhang is Xialing, Shang-Chi's sister, who built a life of her own after he left. Fala Chen plays Li, their mother, and Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery for some welcome comic relief.
Runtime and where to stream
