A sensei with a sword
Colleen runs a small dojo in Chinatown, teaching kids and adults while barely covering the rent. She also takes part in underground cage fights to make ends meet, which tells you a lot about her: disciplined, proud and far tougher than her calm classroom manner suggests. Her weapon of choice is a katana, and the show gives her some of the best sword fights of the Netflix era.
Into her life walks Danny Rand, a young man everyone believed had died years ago in a plane crash. He claims he spent that time training in a mystical city and that he is now the Iron Fist. Colleen thinks he is a little ridiculous. She also cannot deny that he knows kung fu.
Where Colleen appears
- Marvel's Iron Fist (series, optional)
- Marvel's The Defenders (series, recommended)
- Marvel's Luke Cage (series, optional): a guest appearance in the second season
Marvel's Iron Fist is her main show and where her story is told in full. In The Defenders she is a supporting player, but she is right there for the big fights. Our timeline rates Iron Fist optional for the wider MCU, though if you care about Colleen it is the essential one.
Her biggest turning points
The first season of Iron Fist puts her loyalty to the test. Colleen has a history with the Hand, the ancient criminal group that Danny has sworn to destroy, and the show reveals the details gradually. How she handles that discovery, and what she chooses afterward, is the core of her arc.
Her bond with Danny grows from reluctant sparring partner to something much closer, and the two end up as partners in every sense. Later in her story she also forms a strong friendship with detective Misty Knight, a pairing comic fans have wanted to see for a long time.
In Marvel's The Defenders, Colleen fights alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny against the Hand. She does not get as much screen time as the four leads, but she brings personal stakes to the conflict that the others lack.
Friends and allies
Claire Temple is the friend Colleen makes during Iron Fist. Claire starts training at the dojo because she is tired of being the one who gets hurt, and the two become a reliable duo when the fighting starts. That friendship is a nice reminder that the Netflix shows were at their best when ordinary people had each other's backs. Danny Rand is the obvious partner, and Misty Knight becomes her closest ally later on.
Jessica Henwick as Colleen
Jessica Henwick gives Colleen a cool, watchful presence. She plays her as someone who keeps her guard up until she has a reason not to, and her fight scenes look precise and heavy rather than flashy. For many viewers she is the standout of Iron Fist.
Henwick played Nymeria Sand in Game of Thrones and an X-wing pilot in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She later appeared in Glass Onion and as Bugs in The Matrix Resurrections.
Recommended watch order
Watch Iron Fist first, then The Defenders. If you want the full Netflix experience, the cleanest route is Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and then The Defenders, since the team-up assumes you know all four heroes. To jump straight to the action, you can watch The Defenders on its own, but Colleen's choices will make much more sense after Iron Fist.
