From surgeon to sorcerer
Stephen Strange is a brilliant and deeply arrogant neurosurgeon until a car crash wrecks the nerves in his hands. When Western medicine runs out of answers, he travels to Kathmandu looking for a cure and finds Kamar-Taj, a hidden school of the mystic arts led by the Ancient One. Doctor Strange follows his slow, humbling shift from a man who wants his old life back to someone who protects reality itself.
His tools are spells, portals, a magic cloak with a personality and, for a time, the Eye of Agamotto, which holds the Time Stone. That stone makes him a key figure in the Infinity Saga.
His six films
- Doctor Strange
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Avengers: Endgame
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Thor: Ragnarok includes only a short cameo, where Strange helps Thor and Loki find their father, but it is a fun scene and shows off his new confidence. The other five give him real story weight. He also turns up in the optional animated series What If...? (2021), an alternate-universe appearance outside the main timeline.
Turning points, spoiler-light
Avengers: Infinity War is where Strange matters most. As the keeper of the Time Stone, he becomes a direct target for Thanos, and he makes a choice that only becomes clear in Endgame. His sense of the bigger picture defines both films.
Spider-Man: No Way Home starts when Peter Parker asks him for a favor. The spell goes wrong and opens the door to the multiverse, which leads straight into Multiverse of Madness. There Strange protects a young woman who can travel between universes and faces a threat from someone he once fought alongside.
Friends, rivals and allies
Thor is the first Avenger he meets on screen, during that Ragnarok cameo. Hulk (Bruce Banner) crashes through the roof of his New York Sanctum at the start of Infinity War, which is how Strange learns Thanos is coming. Spider-Man (Peter Parker) becomes an unlikely partner in Infinity War and later the person whose request breaks the multiverse open. Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) is central to Multiverse of Madness, and their relationship shifts in ways best discovered on screen. Wong, his friend and fellow sorcerer, appears in most of these films as well.
Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch gives Strange a sharp tongue and a slightly ridiculous dignity, and he never lets the character become too likable too fast. That arrogance is the point: the more Strange learns, the more the films test whether he has really changed. His dry exchanges with Wong and Tony Stark are some of his best moments.
Cumberbatch is known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock and Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. He also starred in the western The Power of the Dog and voiced the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit films.
Which order to watch
Go in release order: Doctor Strange, Ragnarok, Infinity War, Endgame, No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness. Before the last film, add WandaVision; it explains Wanda's state of mind and Multiverse of Madness picks up directly from it. Thor: Ragnarok is the only one you could skip without losing Strange's arc, but it is a great film on its own, so there is little reason to.
