Where to watch Avengers: Infinity War
In the US, Avengers: Infinity War streams on Disney Plus, the same place you will find Endgame. That matters more than usual here, because this film ends on a cliffhanger and you will want the second half within reach. Outside the US, availability varies by country, and the watch box on this page shows your current options.
Infinity War runs 149 minutes, about two and a half hours. If you plan to watch Endgame straight after, set aside more than five hours, or split the pair across two evenings.
What to watch before Avengers: Infinity War
This film assumes you know almost everyone, so the more of the Infinity Saga you have seen, the better. If you need a shortlist, four films set up a specific piece each:
Add Captain America: Civil War if you can. It explains why the Avengers are split up and why Steve Rogers is a fugitive. Our Infinity Saga in order guide lists every film from Iron Man to Endgame if you want the complete run instead.
Where Infinity War sits in the watch order
The story takes place in 2018, and it is the first half of the two-part finale to the Infinity Saga. In theaters it opened in April 2018, after Black Panther and before Ant-Man and the Wasp. In story order those two swap places, since most of Scott Lang's sequel happens just before Thanos arrives, which is why our timeline puts Ant-Man and the Wasp right before this film.
For the team-up films on their own, our Avengers movies in order guide shows where this one falls between Age of Ultron and Endgame.
Avengers: Infinity War explained (spoiler-free)
Thanos has spent years chasing the six Infinity Stones, and he is done waiting. With all six, he could reshape reality with a snap of his fingers. Two of the stones are on Earth, one inside Vision's head, and that puts every hero in the way.
Trouble is, the Avengers are not a team anymore. After Civil War, Steve Rogers is a fugitive and Tony Stark is not speaking to him. So the film splits its cast into several groups across different planets, each trying to slow Thanos down in their own way. Thanos himself gets more screen time than any hero, and the movie treats him less as a monster and more as a man convinced he is right.
That is the key to the whole film. It is structured almost like a villain's journey, with the heroes reacting to him. Once you see it that way, the ending makes a lot more sense.
Avengers: Infinity War post credit scene
There is one scene after the full credits and none in the middle. Without spoiling it, the scene returns to Earth, catches a familiar S.H.I.E.L.D. face in the middle of the chaos, and ends with a signal being sent to someone. It hints at the next hero to join the fight, and that hero's own film, Captain Marvel, fills in the backstory before Endgame.
Why it is essential
It is essential, and you should not watch it without having Endgame ready to go. Infinity War is deliberately incomplete: it ends on a cliffhanger, and Avengers: Endgame picks up right after. Together they resolve threads from nearly every earlier film. If you are pressed for time, the four films above plus Civil War cover the essentials, and our essential Marvel movies and shows list shows the full short route.
Cast and characters
Anthony and Joe Russo direct. Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark and Chris Evans is Steve Rogers. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff. Josh Brolin plays Thanos through performance capture and carries a surprising amount of the film. Peter Parker also gets a sizable role, pairing up with Tony for much of the story.
