Who Edwin Jarvis is
Jarvis works for Howard Stark in postwar America, running his household and, more and more, cleaning up after his employer's messes. When Howard is accused of selling dangerous weapons, he asks Peggy Carter to clear his name, and Jarvis is assigned to help her. He is fussy, polite and plainly out of his depth at first, yet he keeps showing up.
That reluctant partnership is the heart of Marvel's Agent Carter. Peggy is a trained agent working in an office that underestimates her; Jarvis is a gentleman with a few surprises in his past and a strong sense of loyalty. Their banter carries the show, and his devotion to his wife, Ana, gives him a softer side the films never had time for.
Edwin Jarvis movies and shows in order
Our timeline lists three titles:
- Marvel's Agent Carter (series, optional for the main saga)
- Avengers: Endgame (film, essential)
- What If...? (series, optional): an alternate-universe animated appearance
The order is easy because Agent Carter takes place decades before Endgame's present day. The series is a main role across every episode, while the film is a cameo, a single short scene.
Turning points without spoilers
In Agent Carter, the biggest shift is Jarvis going from errand runner to genuine partner. He learns to lie for Peggy, to keep his nerve under pressure and to put himself at risk, and by the end Peggy treats him as an equal rather than a chaperone.
His moment in Avengers: Endgame is tiny but lovely for anyone who watched the series. During the time-heist section, the film drops the audience into an older era of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Jarvis appears alongside Howard for a few seconds. It is a nod to fans, not a plot point.
Howard Stark and the people around him
Howard Stark is the relationship that defines him. Howard is brilliant, charming and careless, and Jarvis is the one person who stays steady around him. That bond explains why Tony, who grew up in that house, chose the name for the AI that runs his armor. Peggy Carter is the other key figure, the friend who turns Jarvis from a servant into an ally.
About the actor: James D'Arcy
James D'Arcy plays Jarvis with crisp timing and a lot of warmth under the stiff collar. He gets laughs from Jarvis being flustered without ever making him a joke, and he and Hayley Atwell work like a classic screen double act. Outside the MCU, D'Arcy is known for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, the crime drama Broadchurch and the naval film Master and Commander.
Best order to watch his titles
If you only care about the main story, Endgame is the essential one, but you would watch it for many other reasons and barely notice Jarvis. To enjoy the character, watch Marvel's Agent Carter first and then Endgame, so his cameo actually lands. You can browse more supporting players in our MCU characters guide.
