Who Howard Stark is
Long before Tony built his first suit, Howard was the genius everyone wanted in the room. During World War II he works on the Super Soldier program that turns Steve Rogers into Captain America. After the war he helps found S.H.I.E.L.D. and builds Stark Industries into a giant. He is brilliant, charming and reckless, and as a father he is distant in ways his son never quite gets over.
That tension is the key to the character. Tony grows up believing Howard cared more about his work than his family, and several films slowly test whether that is the whole truth.
Howard Stark's appearances in story order
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): the young inventor of the war years.
- Marvel's Agent Carter (2015): Peggy Carter's ally in postwar America.
- Iron Man 2 (2010): seen through old footage that he recorded for his son.
- Ant-Man (2015): a S.H.I.E.L.D. executive clashing with Hank Pym.
- Captain America: Civil War (2016): a flashback that reshapes the film.
- Avengers: Endgame (2019): a meeting in the past.
- What If...? (2021): an animated, alternate take.
In release order his first appearance is Iron Man 2, which is why some lists start there.
Two actors, one Howard
Dominic Cooper is the young Howard in Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel's Agent Carter, and the younger version also turns up in the animated What If...?. He plays him as a dashing showman with a pilot's swagger. Cooper is also known for Mamma Mia!, the series Preacher and The Devil's Double.
John Slattery takes over for the older Howard in Iron Man 2, Ant-Man, Civil War and Endgame. He gives the role a weary, sharp-tongued authority that fits a man carrying the weight of his empire. Slattery is best known as the silver-haired ad executive Roger Sterling in Mad Men.
Moments that shaped the Stark legacy
The First Avenger shows Howard at his best: flying Peggy and Steve behind enemy lines and later helping to create Steve's famous shield. In Iron Man 2, a message hidden in his old films gives Tony something he badly needs, both scientifically and personally. Civil War then reveals a painful piece of Stark family history that turns a political argument into something personal. Endgame offers a quieter counterpoint, a conversation between father and son that neither expected. We'll keep the details to ourselves.
Steve, Bucky, Natasha and Tony
Tony Stark lives in his father's shadow for most of the Infinity Saga. Steve Rogers knew Howard as a young friend and wartime partner, which makes Steve one of the few people who can tell Tony who his father really was. Bucky Barnes is tied to Howard through the darkest chapter of the Winter Soldier's past. Natasha Romanoff, who helps expose S.H.I.E.L.D.'s buried secrets alongside Steve, is linked to the agency Howard helped create.
Which order to watch
Start with the essentials: The First Avenger, Civil War and Endgame. Add Iron Man 2 and Ant-Man, both recommended, for the older Howard's side of the story. Agent Carter and What If...? are optional, but Agent Carter in particular gives the young Howard far more screen time than any film.
