Tony Stark, the man who started it all
When we first meet Tony Stark, he is a weapons manufacturer who treats the world like his personal playground. Then he is captured, wounded and forced to build a weapon for his kidnappers. Instead, he builds a suit of armor and escapes. That moment in a cave turns a careless arms dealer into a man trying to make up for what his company has done.
Tony is brilliant, sarcastic and impossible to manage. He is also generous, guilt-ridden and terrified of losing the people he loves. Those contradictions are why audiences followed him for over a decade.
Every Iron Man appearance in order
- Iron Man (2008): the origin of the suit and the start of the MCU.
- Iron Man 2 (2010): Tony goes public and pays for it.
- The Incredible Hulk (2008): a short closing cameo with General Ross.
- The Avengers (2012): the team forms, with Tony at its loudest.
- Iron Man 3 (2013): Tony without his armor, dealing with the fallout of New York.
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): a project of his own goes badly wrong.
- Captain America: Civil War (2016): Tony and Steve on opposite sides.
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): Tony as Peter Parker's mentor.
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018): the fight against Thanos begins.
- Avengers: Endgame (2019): the end of his story in the saga.
The turning points of Tony's arc
Iron Man ends with three words that changed superhero movies: Tony tells the world who he is. The Avengers then forces him to work with people he cannot control, and a choice he makes during the Battle of New York haunts him for years. Iron Man 3 is all about that trauma, with Tony struggling with panic attacks and stripped of almost everything.
His fear leads to Ultron, a peacekeeping program that becomes a threat. It also drives him to support government oversight in Captain America: Civil War, which splits the Avengers down the middle. Homecoming shows a softer side as he takes Peter Parker under his wing, though not always gracefully. By Avengers: Infinity War, the threat he has feared since New York finally arrives. Endgame completes the arc, and we will let it speak for itself.
Friends, rivals and his inner circle
James Rhodes is his best friend and the one person who can tell him to stop. Pepper Potts keeps his company and his life in order. Nick Fury first invites him into the Avengers Initiative, then has doubts about him. Natasha Romanoff first enters his life undercover. His friendship with Steve Rogers is the saga's most complicated relationship: two leaders who respect each other and still keep colliding.
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark
Robert Downey Jr. is so tied to Tony Stark that it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role. He improvises, talks fast and lets the vulnerability show through the jokes. Outside Marvel, he is known for Chaplin and Tropic Thunder, led the Sherlock Holmes films and played Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. He is also set to return to the MCU as a very different character, Victor von Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday.
How to watch Tony's story
Six of his films are essential: Iron Man, The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. If you skip any of those, later moments lose much of their weight. Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 and Spider-Man: Homecoming are recommended. Iron Man 3 is the most rewarding of the three, since it deals directly with Tony's mental state. Watch everything in release order, which here matches story order closely.
