From client to coworker to reporter
Karen does not enter Marvel's Daredevil as a hero. She enters as a woman in serious trouble, framed for a murder after she uncovers corruption at her job. A pair of new lawyers, Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson, take her case, and she ends up working at their tiny firm, Nelson and Murdock, as its secretary, office manager and unofficial investigator.
From there her story is about curiosity and nerve. Karen cannot leave a lead alone, even when it puts her in danger, and she keeps digging long after the professionals have quit. That habit eventually turns her into a reporter.
Her titles, in order
- Marvel's Daredevil (series, recommended)
- Marvel's The Defenders (series, recommended)
- Marvel's The Punisher (series, optional)
- Daredevil: Born Again (series, recommended)
She is a regular in Daredevil, a supporting player in The Defenders and The Punisher, and returns in Born Again. Her scenes in The Punisher are some of the warmest in that grim show.
Turning points to watch for
The early Daredevil episodes are about Karen following a paper trail that leads toward Wilson Fisk, the crime boss behind the city's rot. She makes choices along the way that she keeps secret, and those secrets follow her through the rest of her arc. It is one of the reasons she feels more complicated than a typical sidekick.
Her friendship with Frank Castle is the other big thread. Where Matt and Foggy see a killer, Karen sees a damaged man worth understanding, and she writes about him with more fairness than most of the city would like. The Defenders, meanwhile, puts her on the edge of a much larger fight, mostly from the ground level. She is not a fighter, so the show uses her as the person who notices what the heroes are too busy to see.
The people she is closest to
Daredevil (Matt Murdock) and Foggy Nelson are her work family, and the trio's friendship is the heart of the Daredevil series. Her relationship with Matt also turns romantic, with all the complications his double life brings. The Punisher (Frank Castle) is her unlikely confidant, and Claire Temple is another ally who shares the danger of knowing too much.
Deborah Ann Woll as Karen
Deborah Ann Woll plays Karen in all four shows. She gives the character a mix of warmth and steel that keeps her from being the person who only needs rescuing; Karen often rescues herself. Before Marvel, Woll was best known as the young vampire Jessica Hamby in HBO's True Blood, and she later starred in the thriller Escape Room.
How to watch her story
Watch Daredevil first; without it, Karen's choices in the other shows lose their weight. Then watch The Defenders, which brings the street-level heroes together. Follow with The Punisher if you want her friendship with Frank, since it is the strongest optional material she has, and finish with Daredevil: Born Again.
