Who is Vision?
Vision is a synthetic person created during the chaos of Avengers: Age of Ultron. His body was built to serve Ultron, but the mind inside it draws on J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark's AI assistant, and the Mind Stone in his forehead brings the whole thing to life. The result is something nobody planned: a calm, curious being who can lift Thor's hammer and still has to ask what a person is supposed to feel.
He can phase through walls, fly, change his density and fire beams from the stone. What makes him interesting, though, is that he is brand new to existence and learning everything at once.
Vision's appearances in order
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015, film, essential)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016, film, essential)
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018, film, essential)
- What If...? (2021, series, optional): an alternate-universe animated appearance
- WandaVision (2021, series, essential)
- VisionQuest (2026, series, recommended)
Four essential titles out of six is a high ratio. Vision is never the loudest Avenger, but the plot keeps running through him.
Turning points to watch for
In Civil War he sides with Tony on the Sokovia Accords, partly out of cold logic, and a mistake he makes in battle shows how unsure he still is of his own power. The same film plants the start of his bond with Wanda. Infinity War makes him a target because of the stone, and the choices he and Wanda face are among the hardest in the Infinity Saga. WandaVision then does something strange and wonderful with him that we will not spoil. VisionQuest picks up his story after that series; its plot details are kept close, so go in fresh.
The people who shaped him
Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) is the center of his life. Their relationship is the emotional spine of his arc, and WandaVision is built entirely around it. Tony Stark is the closest thing he has to a creator, while Steve Rogers is the leader he respects but disagrees with in Civil War. Natasha Romanoff is a fellow Avenger who treats him as a teammate rather than a machine, which says a lot about her.
Paul Bettany behind the Mind Stone
Paul Bettany was part of the MCU before Vision existed, as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. Moving from a voice in Tony's ear to a full on-screen role let him carry over that dry, polite manner and slowly warm it up. WandaVision gave him room for comedy, sitcom timing included, that his earlier scenes never asked for. Outside Marvel, he is known for A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander, A Knight's Tale, where he played Chaucer, and The Da Vinci Code.
Watching Vision's story in the right order
Release order works perfectly here. Age of Ultron gives you his birth, Civil War his first big choices and Infinity War the major test. Do not skip WandaVision: it is one of the most personal Marvel series and makes the most sense right after Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Finish with VisionQuest. You can find Wanda and the rest of the cast on our MCU characters list.
