Scott Lang, the reluctant hero
Scott comes out of prison wanting one thing: to be a decent dad to his daughter Cassie. Finding honest work turns out to be harder than any heist. That is when Hank Pym, the scientist who wore the suit decades earlier, picks him for a job only someone with Scott's talents could pull off.
He is no soldier, no genius and no god. He is a guy who talks too much, gets nervous, makes jokes and still shows up when it counts. That down-to-earth quality makes him one of the easiest heroes to root for.
Every Ant-Man movie in order
- Ant-Man (2015, recommended)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016, essential)
- Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018, recommended)
- Avengers: Endgame (2019, essential)
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023, essential)
- Avengers: Doomsday (2026, essential)
All six are films. He also has alternate-universe animated appearances in What If...? (2021) and Marvel Zombies (2025), both optional. For Scott, release order and story order line up, so you never have to jump around.
Big moments, minus the spoilers
His first movie is a small-scale heist comedy with a fun trick: fights that look epic at ant size and silly at human size. In Civil War he answers Steve Rogers' call at the airport and reveals a new size-changing trick that surprises everyone, including the audience.
Ant-Man and the Wasp shows the price of that choice. Scott is stuck at home under house arrest, trying to stay out of trouble, while Hope and Hank pursue a mission into the Quantum Realm. The ending of that film links directly to the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and it sets up the way he returns in Endgame, where his knowledge of the Quantum Realm becomes surprisingly important.
Quantumania drops the whole Lang and Pym family into that subatomic world, where they meet a powerful exile named Kang. It is the most important Scott film for the newer Multiverse Saga. As for Doomsday, Paul Rudd is confirmed to return, but plot details have not been announced.
Hope, Cassie and the Avengers
The Wasp, Hope van Dyne, starts as his tough trainer and becomes his partner in the field and in life. Cassie Lang is his reason for everything, and she grows from a little girl into a young hero in her own right by Quantumania. His first encounter with an Avenger is a clumsy break-in against Sam Wilson, the Falcon, and that rivalry becomes a running joke. Steve Rogers is the one who brings him into the larger fight.
Paul Rudd behind the helmet
Paul Rudd plays Scott in every appearance. He keeps the character relaxed and funny without letting him turn into a cartoon, and the father and daughter scenes feel genuine. Rudd also shares a writing credit on the first Ant-Man.
Long before Marvel he was a favorite in comedies such as Clueless, Anchorman and I Love You, Man, and more recently he joined the mystery series Only Murders in the Building.
Which order to watch
If you are short on time, focus on the four essentials: Civil War, Endgame, Quantumania and, once it arrives, Doomsday. The two recommended films are still worth it. Ant-Man explains who Scott is and why he cares so much about Cassie, and Ant-Man and the Wasp makes his Endgame entrance far more satisfying. Watch them in the listed order and you will have the whole story.
