Who Groot is
Groot is a Flora colossus, a walking tree who can only say three words: "I am Groot." Rocket, his partner in bounty hunting, understands exactly what he means each time, and the joke is that the same line can be a greeting, a complaint or a heartfelt promise. Groot is gentle, loyal and far stronger than he looks.
Part of what makes him special is how he changes. Across the films we see him as a full-grown giant, a tiny sapling, a moody teenager and eventually something closer to an adult again. Each stage is basically a new personality, which keeps a character with one line of dialogue surprisingly fresh.
Groot's titles in order
Here they are in story order, as our timeline lists them:
- Guardians of the Galaxy (essential)
- I Am Groot (animated shorts, optional)
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (recommended)
- Avengers: Infinity War (essential)
- Avengers: Endgame (essential)
- Thor: Love and Thunder (optional)
- The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (special, optional)
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (recommended)
I Am Groot is a set of short animated adventures about baby Groot, so it slots in early even though it was released later. His Thor: Love and Thunder appearance is brief, since the Guardians only travel with Thor at the start of that film.
Growing up on screen
The first Guardians film ends with an act of loyalty that leaves Groot starting over as a sapling, which leads straight into the dancing baby of Vol. 2. By Infinity War he is a sulky teenager glued to a video game, yet he still has a moment that helps Thor in a big way. Endgame and the later Guardians titles keep that growth going, and Vol. 3 gives him some of his most satisfying action.
Groot's family of misfits
Rocket is his best friend and translator, and their bond is the emotional anchor of the team. Star-Lord treats him like a little brother, while Nebula becomes an unlikely ally. Kraglin, the Ravager who joins the crew later, is part of his everyday life in the Holiday Special and Vol. 3.
About the actor: Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel voices Groot, recording the famous line in many different readings so the animators can match each mood. It sounds simple, but finding that much meaning in three words is real voice work. Diesel is best known as Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious films, as the voice of the title robot in The Iron Giant and as Riddick in Pitch Black.
How to watch Groot
For the essentials, watch Guardians of the Galaxy, then Vol. 2, Infinity War and Endgame, and finish with Vol. 3. Slot I Am Groot in after the first film if you want baby Groot extras. Love and Thunder and the Holiday Special are short side stops. More of the Guardians are in our MCU characters directory.
