Where to watch I Am Groot
I Am Groot is a Disney Plus original, and in the US that is where both seasons stream, included with a regular subscription. Each short is listed as its own episode, so you can play one at a time or let the app run them back to back. If you live outside the US, availability can differ by country, and the watch box on this page shows the options for your region.
Because each episode runs about 6 minutes, the shorts work almost anywhere: a lunch break, a wind-down before bed, or a buffer between two longer Marvel titles. Parents often use them as a first taste of the Guardians for kids who are not ready for the movies yet.
I Am Groot watch order explained
The only thing you need first is Guardians of the Galaxy. Its ending explains where Baby Groot came from, and the shorts take that for granted. From there, our story order places I Am Groot around 2014, directly before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where Groot is still small and still causing trouble.
| Viewing plan | How it works | Best for |
|---|
| Story order | All shorts between the first two Guardians films | Chronological marathons |
| Release order | Watch them with the other Phase 4 Disney Plus titles | Following Marvel as it came out |
| Appetizer | One or two shorts before each Guardians film | Families and casual rewatches |
Release order is very different. The first shorts came out in 2022 as part of Phase 4, years after both films, which makes them a neat example of how a chronological watch and a release-order watch can feel nothing alike. Release-order viewers can see exactly where they land in our Marvel Phase 4 in order guide, and the Multiverse Saga in order page shows the bigger stretch they belong to.
What the shorts are about (no spoilers)
Each episode is a self-contained little story starring Groot as a toddler. He gets into trouble with alien creatures, gets very competitive over small things, discovers the joys of a bath and generally makes life harder for whoever is nearby. Most shorts have almost no dialogue, apart from the one phrase Groot is famous for.
The appeal is the animation and the slapstick. The tone is closer to a classic cartoon than to a Marvel movie, with expressive faces and visual gags doing all the talking. That is also why it travels well across ages: there are no plot threads to track and nothing to explain.
Does I Am Groot matter for the MCU?
Not much, and that is fine. We rate it optional. No later film or show depends on anything that happens here, and you can skip the shorts without missing a single story beat.
Watch them if you love Groot, if you are doing a completionist run, or if you want something light between longer titles. Some fans watch all ten in one sitting, while others drop a short or two in front of each Guardians film as an appetizer. Either works. For families, the shorts are a gentle way to introduce kids to the characters before showing them the first Guardians movie, which has rougher humor and more violence.
Voice cast
Kirsten Lepore directs. Vin Diesel voices Baby Groot, the star of every episode. Bradley Cooper returns as Rocket for a guest appearance, and the cast list also includes Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher. Dee Bradley Baker is credited for the Terma baby bird, one of the creatures Groot crosses paths with, and seasoned voice actors fill in the rest of the critters.
Episodes, runtime and credit scenes
I Am Groot has 2 seasons and 10 episodes in total, and each one runs about 6 minutes. That puts the full collection at roughly one hour, shorter than any single Marvel movie and easy to finish in one go.
There are no credit scenes that set up future stories, so you can move straight on to Vol. 2 when you are done.
