The man from the mountains
Most of Wakanda embraces the technology that vibranium makes possible. The Jabari do not. They live high in the snowy mountains, worship the gorilla god Hanuman, and reject the rule of the Black Panther and the Panther cult that supports it. M'Baku is their leader, and in Black Panther he walks into T'Challa's coronation uninvited to challenge him for the throne.
That entrance tells you who he is. He is loud, proud and physically imposing, but not a villain. He sincerely believes Wakanda has lost its way, and he is willing to fight for that belief in the open, under the old rules. He is also unexpectedly funny: one scene with a nervous outsider ends with a joke that became one of the film's most quoted lines.
His appearances in order
- Black Panther (2018, film, essential)
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018, film, essential)
- Avengers: Endgame (2019, film, essential)
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022, film, recommended)
- Avengers: Doomsday (2026, film, essential)
Avengers: Doomsday has not been released yet. Winston Duke is part of the announced cast, but plot details have not been revealed, so nothing here describes his role in it.
From rival to ally (spoiler-light)
Black Panther moves M'Baku from opponent to someone T'Challa can rely on, and how that happens is one of the film's quieter pleasures. The key is respect: M'Baku values honor more than victory, and T'Challa earns his trust the hard way.
By Avengers: Infinity War, the Jabari stand with the rest of Wakanda. M'Baku fights in the Battle of Wakanda next to the Avengers, sharing the field with Steve Rogers, Thor and Bucky Barnes, and he is among the Wakandans who join the final fight in Endgame.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gives him his most important role. With the nation grieving and under threat, he sits on the council and becomes a blunt, steady source of advice for the royal family. His scenes are some of the film's warmest.
The heroes he stands with
His most important bonds are with the royal family, especially T'Challa and his sister Shuri, both covered on our Black Panther character page. In the Avengers films he fights alongside Captain America (Steve Rogers), Thor and the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, who spent time recovering in Wakanda. The rest of the Wakandan cast is in our MCU character directory.
Winston Duke as M'Baku
Winston Duke gives M'Baku size, swagger and a sharp sense of timing. He plays the character's humor and his pride as two sides of the same coin, which is why the shift from rival to ally feels natural instead of forced.
Outside Marvel, Duke played Gabe Wilson, the dad facing his family's doppelgangers in Jordan Peele's horror film Us. Earlier, he had a recurring role as the gang leader Dominic in the series Person of Interest, and he later led the drama Nine Days.
How to watch M'Baku's story
Watch Black Panther first, then Infinity War and Endgame in the main Avengers run. Wakanda Forever comes next and is recommended; it is the film that shows how far he has come. Finally, add Avengers: Doomsday once it is out.
If you want a shorter path, Black Panther and Wakanda Forever together tell almost the entire M'Baku story, while the two Avengers films show him mostly in battle.
