The classmate who notices everything
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Michelle is the girl at the edge of the frame on the academic decathlon team, reading a book, making a dry comment and refusing to care what anyone thinks. She is not Mary Jane Watson, despite the nickname she reveals near the end of the film, and that was a deliberate choice: the MCU built a new character instead of repeating an old one.
What defines her is attention. MJ notices things others miss, especially about Peter Parker, and she pretends not to be interested while clearly paying attention. Her humor is bone-dry, her honesty is blunt, and she would rather make a pointed remark about history than join in the class trip small talk.
Her four Spider-Man films
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017, film, recommended)
- Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019, film, recommended)
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021, film, essential)
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026, film, recommended)
Brand New Day continues the story after No Way Home. This page avoids its details so it stays safe for anyone who has not caught up.
How MJ and Peter's story grows (spoiler-controlled)
Homecoming keeps her in the background, a fun supporting player in Peter's school life. Spider-Man: Far From Home moves her to the center: on a class trip through Europe, Peter plans to tell her how he feels, and MJ turns out to be several steps ahead of him. Their awkward, sweet romance is the film's heart, even with an illusion-casting villain in the way.
Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up right after a shocking public revelation, and MJ is pulled into the chaos with Peter and Ned. College applications, sudden fame and the multiverse all collide. The film's ending matters a lot for her, and it should be watched rather than read about. Brand New Day then takes the story forward from there.
The people in her circle
Peter Parker, our Spider-Man, is her main relationship from the second film onward. Ned Leeds, Peter's best friend, becomes her friend too, and the three form a tight trio in No Way Home. She also shares scenes with Aunt May and with Happy Hogan, who looks out for Peter on Tony Stark's behalf. Meet the rest in our MCU character directory.
Zendaya as MJ
Zendaya plays MJ with an understated, almost mumbled delivery that makes her jokes sneak up on you. She also lets the character's guard come down slowly, so the romance in Far From Home feels earned instead of scripted.
Many fans first knew her from the Disney Channel series Shake It Up. Since then she has led the HBO drama Euphoria, played Chani in the Dune films and starred in the tennis drama Challengers, three very different roles that show her range.
Best order to watch MJ's films
Go in release order: Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home, then Brand New Day. MJ's story is told almost entirely inside the Spider-Man series, so you do not need detours to follow her.
If you want Peter's own arc to make full sense, add Captain America: Civil War before Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame before Far From Home. They are not about MJ, but they explain why Peter is where he is in each film.
