Who this Spider-Man is
This Peter Parker arrives already bitten. The MCU skips the origin story everyone knows and drops him into Captain America: Civil War as a kid who has been fighting street crime in a homemade suit. Tony Stark recruits him for one big fight at an airport, gives him a high-tech upgrade, and sends him home to finish high school.
That setup shapes everything that follows. Where earlier film versions of Spider-Man were loners, Holland's Peter starts out as part of a much bigger world and spends years trying to earn his place in it. He is funny, a little reckless and painfully eager to prove himself.
Spider-Man movies in order
These are his seven MCU appearances, in release order, which is also the best viewing order:
- Captain America: Civil War (essential)
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (recommended)
- Avengers: Infinity War (essential)
- Avengers: Endgame (essential)
- Spider-Man: Far From Home (recommended)
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (essential)
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day (recommended)
The solo films form their own trilogy, sometimes called the "Home" trilogy, and each one picks up from whatever the Avengers movies just did to Peter's life.
Turning points, without big spoilers
Homecoming is about Peter wanting too much, too soon. He wants to be an Avenger; Tony wants him to be a good kid first. The tension between those two goals carries into Infinity War, where Peter finally gets his wish and finds out what it costs.
Far From Home deals with grief and responsibility after Endgame, and it ends on a cliffhanger that changes Peter's life overnight. No Way Home grows out of that cliffhanger and turns into the most emotional chapter of his story. By the end, his world looks very different, which is exactly where Brand New Day begins.
The people around Peter
Iron Man (Tony Stark) is the mentor, the father figure and sometimes the problem. MJ (Michelle Jones), played by Zendaya, starts as a dry, sharp-tongued classmate and becomes the person who knows him best. Ned Leeds is the loyal best friend who finds out Peter's secret early and treats it like the coolest thing ever. Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei, is a younger, warmer take on the character and the moral center of the trilogy.
Tom Holland as Peter Parker
Holland came to the role from stage musical theater and gymnastics, and that physical training shows in how light and bouncy his Spider-Man moves. He leans into the awkwardness: the rambling, the over-excited reports to Happy Hogan, the way he fumbles with girls and gadgets alike. Outside Marvel, he is known for the disaster drama The Impossible and for playing Nathan Drake in Uncharted.
How to watch Spider-Man's story
For the full arc, follow the list above from start to finish. If time is short, keep the four essentials and add Homecoming, because it explains why Peter cares so much about Tony's approval. Far From Home is technically optional, but No Way Home makes far more sense right after it. Brand New Day continues straight from No Way Home's ending, so treat those two as a pair. Our full list of characters lets you trace his friends and rivals through the rest of the timeline.
