Where to watch Spider-Man: Far From Home
Disney Plus is the simplest option in the US, since the two films you need first, Homecoming and Endgame, are there too. The film is listed on fuboTV, YouTube TV and FXNow as well, which can be handy if you already pay for one of those. Outside the US, availability varies by country, so check the watch box on this page for local services.
Spider-Man: Far From Home runs 129 minutes, a little over two hours. Watch through the very end of the credits, since both extra scenes change how you read the story.
What to watch before Spider-Man: Far From Home
Two films are required. Avengers: Endgame explains the Blip, the five-year gap and the loss Peter is still processing when this movie begins. Spider-Man: Homecoming introduces his friends, Aunt May and Happy Hogan. Skip either one and the first act will feel like an inside joke nobody explained.
| Title | Why it matters | Needed? |
|---|
| Avengers: Endgame | The Blip and Tony Stark's legacy | Yes |
| Spider-Man: Homecoming | Peter's friends, May and Happy | Yes |
| Captain America: Civil War | How Peter met Tony | Helpful |
| Captain Marvel | Who Talos is, for the final scene | Helpful |
Where it fits on the MCU timeline
The story is set in 2024, a few months after Endgame. On our timeline it sits after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Disney Plus series set in the same post-Blip period, and before Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In release order it hit theaters in June 2019 as the last Phase 3 film, wrapping up the Infinity Saga. Our Marvel Phase 3 in order guide shows the run of films that leads up to it.
Spider-Man: Far From Home explained: the plot without spoilers
Peter just wants a normal summer. His class is heading to Europe, and he has a plan to tell MJ how he feels somewhere romantic. Being Spider-Man is the last thing on his list.
Nick Fury has other ideas. Giant creatures made of water, fire and earth are attacking European cities, and a new hero in a fishbowl helmet, Quentin Beck, claims to know where they come from. Fury wants Peter on the team, and Peter keeps trying to say no while the school trip keeps detouring into disaster zones.
The film is lighter than Endgame but asks a serious question: who fills the gap Tony Stark left? Peter is not sure he wants that job, and Beck seems like a far better candidate. The answer drives the second half.
The Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credit scenes (light spoilers)
There are two, and both matter. The mid-credits scene is one of the biggest in the franchise: a news broadcast turns Peter's life upside down in a single moment and leads straight into Spider-Man: No Way Home, which picks up seconds later. Do not leave before it.
The scene at the very end of the credits reveals that some characters in the film were not quite who they seemed, and it shows where the real Fury has been. That twist is the setup for the Disney Plus series Secret Invasion, and it recasts a few earlier scenes in hindsight. Knowing Talos from Captain Marvel makes it land much better.
Why it matters
Far From Home is recommended rather than essential for the full MCU, but it is required for the Spider-Man storyline. Spider-Man: No Way Home starts where its mid-credits scene ends, so the two work almost like one long story. If you only want Peter's films, our Spider-Man Marvel movies in order guide lists every movie he appears in.
Cast and characters
Jon Watts returns as director. Tom Holland plays Peter Parker, and Jake Gyllenhaal joins as Quentin Beck, also called Mysterio, who quickly becomes Peter's role model. Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury, Marisa Tomei plays May Parker, Jon Favreau is Happy Hogan, and Zendaya gets much more to do as MJ. Ned Leeds is back as Peter's best friend and is having a very different school trip of his own.
What to watch next
You have a choice. Stay with Peter by moving on to No Way Home, or keep to story order with Shang-Chi and pick up the next Spider-Man film later. Both routes work, but the first is better if the cliffhanger has you hooked.
