Who Pepper Potts is
Virginia "Pepper" Potts is the woman who keeps Tony Stark's life from falling apart. When we meet her in Iron Man, she handles his schedule, his messes and his dates, and she is the only person who talks back to him without fear. That dynamic is the heart of the film. Tony is a genius who refuses to grow up; Pepper is the competent professional who knows exactly how much he depends on her.
What makes the character work is that she is never just "the girlfriend." Her story is about responsibility. She is good at her job, she cares about the people around Tony, and over time she takes on a load that would crush most people.
Pepper's movies, in order
These are the titles where she appears, in the order our timeline lists them:
- Iron Man (essential)
- Iron Man 2 (recommended)
- The Avengers (essential)
- Iron Man 3 (recommended)
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (recommended, a short late appearance)
- Avengers: Infinity War (essential)
- Avengers: Endgame (essential)
Big moments for Pepper (light spoilers)
In the first film, Pepper is the one who helps Tony uncover what is happening inside his own company, and she ends up in real danger because of it. Iron Man 2 gives her a promotion that changes everything: Tony hands her control of Stark Industries, and the film plays her new job against his self-destructive streak.
By The Avengers she and Tony are a couple, celebrating the new tower in New York in one of the film's warmest early scenes. Iron Man 3 is her biggest showcase on this list. She is pulled directly into the conflict with Aldrich Killian and his Extremis program, and the film lets her be much more than someone waiting to be rescued.
Her Spider-Man: Homecoming appearance is small but fun. She pops up near the end, and the scene tells you a lot about where she and Tony stand. Infinity War opens with the two of them planning a future together just before the threat arrives, and Endgame gives her a moment fans waited years to see.
Related characters
Tony Stark is the obvious one; nearly every Pepper scene is really about the two of them. Happy Hogan, Tony's driver and bodyguard, is the friend who gets stuck between them, and he is a constant presence in her films. Phil Coulson spends time around her in the first two Iron Man movies, back when S.H.I.E.L.D. was still a mysterious agency knocking on Tony's door. Nick Fury runs that agency, and the world he represents is what keeps pulling Tony away from the normal life Pepper wants for him.
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper
Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper in every film on the list. She brings a dry, quick, slightly exasperated energy that matches Robert Downey Jr.'s motormouth Tony perfectly, and much of their dialogue feels improvised in the best way. She also makes Pepper's competence believable: you never doubt she could run a company.
Outside Marvel, Paltrow is best known for Shakespeare in Love, Emma, Sliding Doors and The Royal Tenenbaums.
How to watch Pepper's story
If you only want her essential arc, watch Iron Man, The Avengers, Infinity War and Endgame. For the full version, go in release order: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The second and third Iron Man films carry most of her growth, so they are worth it even though our list marks them as recommended rather than essential.
Homecoming is a Peter Parker movie first, so treat Pepper's part as a bonus. You can browse the rest of the cast in our Marvel character guide.
