Who is Wong?
Wong is a master of the mystic arts and, when we first meet him in Doctor Strange, the stern guardian of the library at Kamar-Taj. He protects books that could end the world if the wrong person read them, and he takes overdue returns very personally. Stephen Strange arrives as an arrogant surgeon who thinks he can charm anyone. Wong is the first person he cannot charm, and that running joke slowly turns into one of the MCU's most reliable friendships.
He is one of the most frequent supporting faces in the newer MCU. This page lists all eight of his appearances, with the three Strange-centered films as his core run.

From librarian to Sorcerer Supreme
The biggest change in Wong's story happens between films. Strange was among the people who vanished for five years after Thanos's snap, and someone had to hold things together in the meantime. By No Way Home, Wong carries the title of Sorcerer Supreme, the highest rank among the masters, and he makes sure Strange knows it. That gives their scenes a fun reversal: the student who used to break every rule now has to listen to the librarian. In No Way Home, Wong is also the voice of caution when a spell starts to look like a very bad idea.
Multiverse of Madness puts that new title to the test. Kamar-Taj becomes a fortress, and Wong has to lead the defense with everything the sorcerers have. He is no longer a sidekick here; the film treats him as a leader with his own courage and his own losses.
Allies and old friends
Doctor Strange (Stephen Strange) is the friendship that defines Wong. The two bicker like old roommates, but each one trusts the other with the fate of reality. Mordo is a fellow master in the first film, and his strict view of the rules sets up a split that Wong handles very differently. Christine Palmer belongs to Strange's life outside Kamar-Taj, the hospital and the past he left behind, and her world rarely overlaps with Wong's at all.
Benedict Wong in the role
Benedict Wong plays Wong with a deadpan delivery that can make one raised eyebrow funnier than a full joke. He also gives the character real authority, so when the comedy stops and Wong gets serious, you believe it. Outside the MCU he appeared in Ridley Scott's The Martian and Prometheus, played Kublai Khan in the series Marco Polo and is part of the cast of 3 Body Problem. He also had a role in the science fiction film Annihilation.
Watching Wong's story in order
Start with Doctor Strange, which explains Kamar-Taj, the Sanctums and why sorcerers guard the world. Then watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Wong has a short but important role. Finish with Multiverse of Madness, which gives him his biggest screen time. You can watch No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness back to back, since the second picks up on Strange's mistakes from the first. Our characters index has pages for Strange's other allies.
