Ms. Marvel watch order: where the series fits
Ms. Marvel premiered on June 8, 2022, a few months after Moon Knight. Our story timeline places them the other way around: Kamala's story comes after Spider-Man: No Way Home and before Moon Knight. None of those titles share plot threads with her, so the placement is about timing, and you can watch the series without them.
It belongs to the middle of Phase 4, a stretch full of new heroes getting their first stories. Our Marvel Phase 4 in order guide lists every movie and show from that period in sequence, which helps if you want to see Ms. Marvel next to the projects released around it.
What to watch before Ms. Marvel
Nothing is required. The film that helps most is Captain Marvel, because Kamala is a devoted fan of Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel. She writes fan fiction about her, makes videos about her and builds a costume to wear at AvengerCon. You can follow the show without the movie, but knowing Carol makes Kamala's hero worship funnier and makes the final scene land.
New to the MCU altogether? Our Marvel watch order for beginners suggests a short starter list that makes the Phase 4 shows easier to follow.
What the series is about (spoiler-free)
Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager in Jersey City who loves superheroes, draws comics and spends a lot of her life online. Her parents are loving but protective, school is awkward, and AvengerCon is the biggest event of her year.
Then a bangle from her grandmother gives her powers, and the heroes she admires suddenly do not seem so far away. Those powers raise questions about her family's past, which the series explores with more care than most Marvel projects, and part of the story takes her well beyond New Jersey. Expect a coming-of-age comedy with animated doodles and text messages popping up on screen, mixed with real family history.
Her supporting cast gets room to breathe too. Kamala's mother worries, her father jokes, her brother is planning his wedding, and her friends have problems of their own. That everyday texture is a big part of the charm.
The Ms. Marvel post-credit scene explained (spoilers)
Skip this section if you want the finale completely fresh.
Only the last episode has an extra scene, and it plays partway through the credits. Kamala is back home in her bedroom when her bangle starts acting strangely. In an instant she is gone, and in her place stands Carol Danvers, looking around the room with no idea how she got there or why the walls are covered with pictures of herself.
That swap is the setup for The Marvels. In the film, Kamala, Carol and Monica Rambeau keep trading places whenever they use their powers, and the mid-credits scene is the first time it happens. It also explains why Carol ends up meeting the Khan family, one of the film's most enjoyable threads. No other episode has a credits scene, so this is the one to wait for.
Why it matters: Ms. Marvel and The Marvels
Kamala is one of the three leads in The Marvels, which is the main reason we rate the series recommended. Skip it and you will meet her family in the film without the background that makes them so likable, and the swapping will start without its first beat.
The series also introduces Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, one of the younger heroes the MCU has been building up. She later turns up in other projects, including a voice role in the animated Marvel Zombies.
| Route to The Marvels | Why it helps |
|---|
| Captain Marvel | Carol's origin and the hero Kamala idolizes |
| WandaVision | How Monica Rambeau got her powers |
| Ms. Marvel | Kamala, her family and the swap in the credits |
Cast and characters
Iman Vellani plays Kamala with an enthusiasm that feels genuine, because she was a real fan of the comics before she was cast. Matt Lintz is her best friend Bruno, an inventor, and Yasmeen Fletcher plays Nakia, her other close friend. Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur play her parents, Muneeba and Yusuf, and Saagar Shaikh is her older brother Aamir. Bisha K. Ali served as head writer.
Where to watch Ms. Marvel and how long it takes
In the US, Ms. Marvel streams on Disney Plus, alongside Captain Marvel and The Marvels. There is one season of 6 episodes, each around 48 minutes, so the full series takes just under five hours. A good plan is to finish the series over a weekend and watch The Marvels right after, while the final scene is still fresh. The marathon plan can line up all three titles for you.
