A genius from another Earth
Reed Richards is the scientist at the center of Marvel's First Family. In The Fantastic 4: First Steps, he and his team already have their powers when the story starts: a space flight exposed them to cosmic rays, and Reed's body became endlessly elastic. The film skips a long origin story and treats the four as established heroes and celebrities.
The bigger surprise is where they live. First Steps is set on a separate Earth with a retro-futuristic, sixties-inspired look, not on the main MCU Earth where the Avengers operate. That matters for anyone following the timeline: this film works as a fresh starting point, and you do not need to have seen anything else to follow it.

The emotional core of First Steps is family, not a fight. Reed and Sue Storm are expecting a child, and Reed, a man who solves every problem with math, has to face one that cannot be calculated. Then a cosmic threat arrives in the form of Galactus, a planet-devouring giant, announced by his herald, the Silver Surfer.
Reed's arc is about the cost of being the smartest person in the room. He sees every risk, which makes him careful to the point of paralysis, and the film tests whether that caution protects his family or endangers it. How the story resolves is best discovered on screen.
His family and future allies
His wife, Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), is his equal and often the one who makes the final call. Ben Grimm, The Thing, is Reed's oldest friend and the heart of the team, and Sue's brother Johnny Storm rounds out the four. Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards
Pedro Pascal plays Reed as warm, slightly awkward and visibly burdened by his own brain. It is a gentler take than the cold genius of some comics, and Pascal leans on his ease as a dad figure, something audiences know well from his other work.
Before Marvel, he became famous as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones and as DEA agent Javier Peña in Narcos. He is also the title character in The Mandalorian and plays Joel in the series The Last of Us.
