Frank Castle in a sentence
Frank is a former Marine whose family was killed in a shootout in New York, and he responds by waging a one-man war on the criminals he holds responsible. He does not wear a mask or have powers. He has military training, a lot of guns and absolutely no interest in the rules that heroes like Matt Murdock live by.
That last point is the whole appeal. The character exists to argue with the idea of a hero. He is frightening, sometimes sympathetic, and never someone the shows ask you to fully cheer for.
Where Frank appears, in order
Our timeline lists four titles:
- Marvel's Daredevil, recommended. Frank arrives in the show's second season.
- Marvel's The Punisher, optional. His solo series.
- Daredevil: Born Again, recommended. He returns to Matt Murdock's world.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day, recommended. His first appearance in an MCU movie.
How to watch Daredevil and Punisher in order
This is one of the most common questions about Frank, and the answer is simple. Watch the first season of Daredevil for context on Hell's Kitchen and Matt, then the second season, where the Punisher is introduced and clashes with Daredevil. After that, move to Marvel's The Punisher, which picks up Frank's life after those events. Daredevil: Born Again follows, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes last.
You can skip ahead to Daredevil's second season if you only care about Frank, but you will miss why Matt and his friends react to him the way they do. Both shows were made for Netflix and now stream on Disney Plus in the US. They are much more violent than the movies, so keep that in mind.
Turning points (light on spoilers)
Daredevil's second season is Frank's origin in this continuity. It starts with him as a mystery that the city is terrified of and slowly reveals the man behind it, building to a famous courtroom storyline. His solo series digs into the military past behind the tragedy and asks whether Frank can ever stop. Brand New Day brings him into Peter Parker's world; we will not say more about his role there.
Related characters
Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll, is the person in Frank's life who matters most across both shows. She is a reporter who keeps trying to understand him instead of judging him, and their scenes give Frank the warmth that the rest of his story refuses him. Matt Murdock is his natural opponent and occasional reluctant ally, and their arguments about killing define Daredevil's second season.
Jon Bernthal as the Punisher
Jon Bernthal plays Frank in every title on the list. He is physical and loud in the fights, but the best moments are the quiet ones: a long monologue about his family, a flash of grief he tries to swallow. That mix of menace and heartbreak is why many fans consider him the definitive live-action Punisher.
Outside Marvel, Bernthal is well known as Shane on The Walking Dead and as Michael in The Bear, and he appears in The Wolf of Wall Street and Ford v Ferrari.
