Who is Steve Rogers?
Steve is a skinny kid from Brooklyn who keeps trying to enlist during World War II and keeps getting turned away. An experimental super-soldier program rebuilds his body, but the movie is clear that his stubborn decency is what earned him the chance. Captain America: The First Avenger covers that origin, his war against the Red Skull and HYDRA, and the crash that leaves him frozen in the Arctic for about 70 years.
When he wakes up in modern New York, almost everyone he knew is old or gone. That quiet grief makes him more than a flag on a costume: he is a man from another era deciding whether his country still deserves his trust.

Turning points, kept spoiler-light
The Avengers hands Steve a team that does not want a leader, and he earns the job in the middle of a battle. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the real shift. He discovers that the organization he works for has been compromised, and the film recasts him as someone who follows his conscience over orders. It also brings back a face from his past in a way that drives the next two movies.
That thread blows up in Captain America: Civil War, where a government plan to supervise the Avengers splits the team in two. Steve lands on the opposite side from Tony Stark, and by Infinity War he is living off the grid, bearded and without his famous shield. Endgame then gives him one of the most satisfying arcs in the franchise. We will leave it there.
The people who shaped him
Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) becomes his most trusted partner during The Winter Soldier, where the two spend much of the film on the run. Nick Fury pulls him into the modern world and, for better or worse, keeps secrets from him. Falcon / Captain America (Sam Wilson) meets Steve on a morning run, turns into his loyal wingman and later carries the Captain America name forward.
Tony Stark is the friction. The two respect each other and clash constantly, and their relationship is the emotional core of the later Avengers films.
Chris Evans behind the shield
Chris Evans plays Steve in every film on the list. He strikes a tricky balance: earnest without turning corny, physically commanding without losing the sense that Steve is still the small guy who would not back down from a bully.
Outside the MCU, Evans is known for the mystery comedy Knives Out, the sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer and, earlier, for playing Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films. Fans often ask if he quit Marvel after Endgame. He did step away from the role for years, which is why his name on the Avengers: Doomsday cast drew so much attention.
The best way to watch Steve's story
Go in the order above. If you are short on time, the three solo films plus Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame carry most of his growth. Age of Ultron is the one people are tempted to skip, but it sets up the Sokovia fallout that Civil War depends on, so keep it if you can. Do not skip The First Avenger either; many emotional beats in Endgame call back to it.
